Udupi, Sep 25: In a tragic incident, a young man passed away after accidentally falling into a pond near Kurkalu-Manipura bridge near Katapady here on Friday September 25.

The deceased has been identified as Vijith Suvarna (30), a resident near Manipura Math. He was the son of Nagesh Suvarna and Meenakshi.

Vijith and his friends had gone to the pond for a bath. While his friends were swimming, Vijith sat on a concrete slab next to the pond, as he did not know swimming.

All of sudden, the concrete slab broke away and Vijith who was sitting on it fell into the pond. He was immediately washed away by the currents.

Vijith's friends Vishwanath Suvarna and Praveen Kurkalu who were nearby dived into the pond to rescue him, but they too were pulled away by the force of the water. The other people who were nearby rushed to their rescue and managed to bring them ashore.

On learning about Vijith, expert swimmers arrived at the spot and brought him out of the water. He was rushed to hospital, where he breathed his last.

Vijith was the president of the youth wing of Manipura Sri Narayana Guru Dharmapalana Sangha, and a member of Billava Sangha Chende troupe.

Shirva police arrived at the spot and registered a case.
