Mangaluru: Cheshire Homes celebrates 50 years of service to needy

Mangaluru, Sep 27: Cheshire Homes India - Mangaluru on Sunday September 27 celebrated its golden jubilee at its 13th home located at Suvarna Lane here. Cheshire Homes India-Mangaluru was established on August 7, 1965.

Addressing the gathering, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said, "I salute Cheshire Homes for rendering service to the people who are rejected by the society for the past 50 years. Today people are behind power and glory. Joint families are breaking apart, nuclear families are emerging, no one is concerned about the disabled and the aged people of the society. The government fully supports the Cheshire Homes. I thank the then DCs Ramachandra and Nagegowda for being the chairpersons of Cheshire Homes and doing a great job. The district adminstration will also provide food every month on behalf of the government and is ready to support the Cheshire Homes in every way in future."

Former union minister and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes lauded the efforts of the children, inmates of Cheshire Homes, who presented a colouful welcome dance and song, and said, "It is not easy to sing and dance in front of a crowd, but the differently-abled children performing on the stage is indeed a great achievement. Service to the poor is akin to doing God's work, and I thank Cheshire Homes, Mangaluru for rendering constant service to the less privileged for the past 50 years."

Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, bishop of Mangalore diocese presented mementoes to all the inmates on the occasion and conveyed his best wishes while lauding Cheshire Homes for its service of five decades.

Rana Philip, chairman, Cheshire Homes India national council and Cheshire Homes, Bengaluru unveiled the portrait of Captain Leonard Cheshire, founder of Cheshire Homes Fraternity.

Founder member and former MLC Octavia Albuquerque and Wilma Aranha, president of Cheshire Homes, Mangaluru were honoured on the occasion.

Mayor Jacintha Alfred, MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D'Souza, Blossom Fernandes and others were present.

Skits and dance by the inmates of the home added the colour to the occasion.

    Congratulations to Cheshire Homes, Mangaluru on its golden jubilee. The Homes are doing very noble work and continuing the spirit of Group Captain Leonard Cheshire who founded the homes after the Second World War and established the first home in Delhi in 1948, followed by a home in Mumbai in 1950. I had the privilege of helping start three homes in Canada, two in Saskatoon and one in Ottawa in the early 1970s, and had the privilege of visiting with my late friend Dr. John Owen all the homes in India in 2001, including the one in Mangaluru when my late friend Terry Vaz was the administrator. Continue the good work under the tireless leadership of Octavia Albuquerque and Wilma Aranha.
