Mangaluru: Child porn on Twitter - FIR filed, awareness programmes on anvil

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV/SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 10: Days after the matter came to light, a first information report (FIR) was registered in Pandeshwar police station here on Friday October 9 against social networking website Twitter under both IT Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for promoting child porn and animal sex.

Various organizations led by Santhosh Kumar, who first brought the issue to the notice of social welfare organizations, complained to Pandeshwar police station about posting of sexually explicit blue films, videos, animal sex video, porn content with the participation of minors etc in Twitter. The complainants have urged the police to see that social networking websites with the above content as well as sites containing sex videos are frozen, and stern legal action is initiated against them.

The delegation which visited the police station comprised Prof Hilda Rayappan, director of Prajna Counselling Centre, Renni D'Souza of Padi, coordinating officer of Mangaluru Childline-1098, Yogeesh Malligemadu, Nagaraj Panakaje, Asuntha D'Souza, psychiatrists and representatives of various organizations including social activists as its members. In a press note, Padi Childline said that this could be the first time in the state that an FIR has been registered in a case like this.

Santhosh Kumar in his complaint noted that viewing of such content disturbs the minds of children, makes them to choose wrong paths in life, and incites them to get involved with serious offences like rape.

Speaking to daijiworld, which had reported the issue earlier, Santhosh Kumar said that the matter would not end with just filiing a complaint. "We will hold a public awareness campaign next week on the issue to alert the parents about the need to protect children from such content on the internet."

Renni D'Souza said, "Next week we will hold a consultation meeting with experts, psychologists and the police on how to tackle the issue. Mangaluru police is not equipped to handle such cybercrime cases. The police in Mangaluru do not have expertise in cybercrime. They should be trained in dealing with pornography related issues and have access to trace the culprits. Such facility is available in Bengaluru, but the system in Mangaluru too should be upgaded to deal with such cases."

I had highlighted this exact subject even in my comments on Daijiworld previously when there was a hue and cry about the governments porn ban that parents in Mumbai and Delhi have started sending their children to porn deaddiction centers or counsellors which was a hush-hush news then among social circles. All it takes for a kid is to type the name of a Hindi film heroine Sunny Leone in google to gain entry into the world of porn and porn addiction. It was also so surprisingly to note an anchor on NDTV behaving in a manner that she was going to miss something so very personally once she got home and was literally jumping up in her chair all for a porn ban. Yes in a hyperdemocratized nation we are handicapped by our failures and weaknesses itself as against laws.

Very true!! The dramatic increase in sexual crimes can be mostly attributed to the availability of easy 'explicit' porn to 'impressionable' and 'corrupt' minds who cannot control their hormonal surge after viewing this, along with alcohol or drugs this makes a very dangerous combination!!

Bad weeds also grow along with good crops.
No option but should learn to deal with it. Off course, it is difficult. Whenever some new good thing come, we may think some thing bad may also be there.

Kudos to those who have found out this issue and taken steps for its curtailment. Sad to read that the mangalore police took time to realise that this is a social disease and after the pressure NGO's the case was registered. Even more the statement made by the NGO regarding the lack of equipment/ training from the cyber branch of police is surprising, hope the concerned department will facilitate this training.
