Mangaluru: Chemists to go on strike against online sale of medicines

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (JS)

Mangaluru, Oct 10: "Chemists and druggists throughout the country have decided to keep their shops shut on October 14. This is being done to oppose the centre's decision to regularize e-pharmacies that sell medicines through the internet," said Ganesh Kamath, secretary of South Canara Druggists and Chemists Organisation.

Addressing a press meet here on Saturday October 10, Kamath said, "Karnataka Organization of Chemists and Druggists which is registered under All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) that consists of more than eight lac members across the country has called for this shut down. There are many retail and small medical shops and they are depending on this industry to earn their livelihood. They will all be on streets if medicines are permitted to sell online.

"The companies are doing this illegally, violating the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Younger generation can get easy access to some drugs which can be addictive. This will create easy access of such drugs. Anyone can make false prescription and get medicines. The quality of the medicines cannot be guaranteed as they are sold online. The move will also effect the earnings of 8 lac chemists and their 80 lac staffers throughout the country. For all these reasons, they are upset by the legal sanction to this illegal business," he said.

"As there can be emergiencies, pharmacies attached to hospitals and nusing homes will be exempted from the strike so as not to cause inconvenience to the public," he added.

Shridhar Kamath, president, South Canara Druggists and Chemists Organization and others were present.

What an irony. They are promoting online sale of medicine by closing the stores. When there is a bandh people will surely opt for online stores. More such bandhs and online medicines will be the next big thing on e-commerce..Brainless people.

Money power and corruption plays an important, key role in all these malpractices. As somebody said above, even dead body is kept on ventilator in order to make/bill more money. Now in recent times, medical profession is no more noble profession. Those who got enough money to doll out as per hospital/doctor's suggestion, they only can survive. For poor and middle class people,no way, they have to struggle, lick their elbow through out their life.Under the present scenario, patient's party will die earlier than the patient because of the tension, when they admit their patient to the hospital.Medical treatment has gone up like anything and skyrocketing day by day.No one to control this spiraling prices.

medicines in india except those under drug control are overpriced.in any hospital bill, the medicine cost is biggest component. online pharmacies are fine provided they follow all rules and dispense medicines with proper prescription verification.

All these vultures were cashing on patient's desperation by selling the drugs at 400plus percentage margin. sometimes even more.
Now they are scared when online companies are about to sell at minimum margin.
A smart TV which i bought online @ 40000, costs rs 72000 in showrooms.
Sameway, the online medicines will be much cheaper than the drug store prices.

I used to buy medicines every month to my father worth 1600 INR from local medical stores . Recently i switched to online medical store(Medicart) which cost me 1100 INR for same medicine from same company's.Even you have a choice to buy Generic medicine for much cheaper cost. delivery is within 3-4 days. I see nothing wrong with online sale if the consumers are looted so far by brick & mortal stores. Why pay more when you get same for less?

Dr Hegde rightly said medical profession is no more a noble now as many clinics, labs give targets to doctors they have to write more tests, medicines than actually required, even dead body is kept on ventilator in ice where no one is allowed to hike the bills.

Fully agree, Dr. Hegde is speaking the absolute truth, and it becomes all the more authentic since he himself is a highly qualified doctor who has seen and experienced the malpractices himself!! Let his tribe increase!!

These guys get very handsome cuts on most medicines and most of them act as doctors too to many poor and uneducated people who just tell their symptoms and these guys give medicines without asking for any prescriptions and now they are pointing fingers at e-retailers!! Doing such strikes is not going to do anything, instead these guys need to evolve and upgrade themselves or they will be thrown out of business as e-retailing is not new to the world, it is well established in advanced countries too!!

Those patients with infections & immediate medicines cannot buy medicines online.
Only those people who are dependent on medicines to control their ailments can buy online, which is their right to have at a reasonable price. The pharmacies sell not only drugs but many other drinks & formulas as well, they will have their business, as all cannot get them online in near future.

At times like this digital world, everybody has the right to do any Business, even sending medicines.People who are not able to go to pharmacy have the possibility to get it by post.In west,it is allowed.many People use this possibility.when our Pharmacists go on strike, patients who depend on medicines for emergency use in Hospital, will be a big Problem and can lead to even to death. So they should think over it.Of course even in west People are not happy over it.but in west they have better Arrangements to have medicine in emergency cases.Instead of thinking Profit they should think a way out or self start one. They too are not all without sins.sell medicines which are date of expiry has over.Tablets are given packed not as full with Explanation but only few are given .when complication happen nobody knows which medicine it is.

    Grapes are Sour.

If it is cheaper to get he quality drugs online what is the problem?

All over the world and especially in the west, medicines are available on line and in bulk quantities.

The chemists are not worried about the addiction. They are worried about loss of revenue and mega profits.

If phones and clothes can be got online, why not medicines.

Cut out the middleman and reduce the prices.

Tough that your own BJP govt has cut the ground under your own feet

I Used the term 'Your BJP Govt' because traders form the backbone of the BJP.

The parivar will try and guard the traders against any threat as long as their coffers are full.
