Mangaluru: Crematorium land issue - District administration under minority community, says VHP

Mangaluru, Oct 11: The district unit of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Sunday October 11 held a strong protest against the demand for a portion of the Nandigudda crematorium land placed by a mosque.

Noorul Islam Madrasa and Moideen Juma Masjid have asked the district administration to provide 26 cents out of the 2.58 acres of the crematorium land for use as burial ground for the Muslim community. Raising strong objections, the VHP on Sunday held a rally from Attavar to Nandigudda crematorium where a protest meet was held.

Addressing the protest, VHP district president Jagadish Shenava said, "Minority communities do not allow us to live peacefully. Wherever the number of minorities is more, there are conflicts. Now you have to fight against this and today I see about a thousand people gathered here, which is a good sign. They (Muslims) have asked for 28 cents of land here and we might feel its a small portion and we should agree to it. Now you are sleeping peacefully in the morning, but if this 28 cents of land is given, first they will use it for burial and then early morning prayers will start at 4.15 am and you will not be able to sleep in the morning.

"If you see in Pumpwell area, people there cannot sleep in the morning because of the noise from the mosque. First they ask for land, then eventually they will build mosque. Let this protest be a warning to MLAs Mohiuddin Bava and J R Lobo and ministers U T Khader and Ramanath Rai. If so many people can gather in just three days of the call for protest, then a full-fledged protest will surely see 20,000 people joining in," he said.

VHP district joint secretary Shivanand Mendon said, "Hindu crematorium is located in 9.5 acres land and about one acre of land has already been given to Mescom by the district administration without the knowledge of the Hindu community. The mosque had earlier asked for 2.95 acres which was rejected, and now it has again asked for 28 cents.

"There are about 5 lac Hindus in Mangaluru and this is the only crematorium which is available for them. We cannot give this land to anyone. In case we do not save this crematorium now, tomorrow our children will question us, saying 'anyway we cannot live, we do not even have place to conduct the final rites'."

Chief secretary of district VHP Jitendra Kottari said, "In Kerala there is a district called Malabar where right from MLA to police constable, everyone is from the minority community, and weekly holiday is on Friday. If we allow the present situation to continue, then even Mangaluru would become another Malabar. In Mangaluru, the district administration is under the minority community. All officers like deputy commissioner, MUDA chairman, RTO, and MLAs are from the minority communities. J R Lobo, Mohiuddin Bava and U T Khader are trying to have a minority-ruled district administration.

"To all those people who say right-wing organizations are jobless and spread wrong ideas among the public, the number of people gathered here itself is an answer. Today all of those detractors have been proved wrong. This is a fight not only of VHP and Bajrang Dal, but of the Hindu community. Through this protest, I want to caution the MLA and the DC. If this land is given to Muslims, then it would lead to riots," he warned.

President of Nandigudda Crematorium Committee Vasanth Shetty said, "To fight legally we need a registered committee, hence we have formed the Nandigudda Crematorium Committee, which includes the locals also. There are about one lac labourers who have come here from Vijaypura and other parts of Karnataka, and they are also buried in the same crematorium. Only 5 bodies can be cremated at a time, and rest of the bodies have to be sent back or have to wait. There is a need to save this crematorium. In the coming days, as the population of Hindus increases, it would lead to more problems due to lack of space."

The protestors also shouted slogans asserting that no portion of the crematorium land would be given.

Kateel Dinesh Pai, Sharan Pumpwell, Gopal Kuthar, Krishnamurthy and others were part of the protest.

How big was the mosque on lighthouse hill a decade ago? No one raises objection for the encroachment/legally sanctioned area for the expansion. But if Hindus demand for portion of that land then it is objectionable.
The land was sanctioned for Hindu crematorium and demanding a portion of that by muslims is objectionable.

Dear all, why we common people or aam aadmi don’t try to understand the situation? Why Muslims are adamant to have a portion of this land which is allocated to Hindus or belongs to Hindus – whatever it may be! I think we the aam aadmi if we want can resolve this issue and approach the government or district administration and request them to allocate a separate land for Muslims. The issue is resolved and in case if any the Hindu outfit protest against allocating a separate land…, then there is something wrong. Otherwise NO issues dear all.

One more thing, whatever we argue here, does this taken into consideration or any of the administrators look into our comments? A very big NO. Then why we fight here with counter allegations and sometime may be a feeding point for some to take some ideas from our discussion and create an issue out of it.

Jitendra Kottari, your lies will always not work. People are educated. There is no Malabar district in Kerala. There was Malabar District in Madras Presidency / Madras State. You are trying to fool people.
For Jagadish Shenava’s comments about morning prayers, I would like to clarify that according to Ayurveda, waking up about one and a half hour before the sunrise will synchronize with the rhythm of sun. This time is called Brahma Muhurta. According to today’s timing, before 4:50 am is Brahma Muhurta.

    May God show right path.

Hi Guys...as living people we have stopped to live in peace and harmony. At least our dead can live in peace and harmony. There are places in karnataka, where the cemeteries of Hindu, Muslim and Christians are side by side. Have you ever heard any communal strife or violence from them. They are our model. See how peacefully they rest in peace...So not only to the Muslims, a plot to the Christians too should be allotted so that we the Mangaloreans learn from the dead how to live.

This rights will subsists till they reach majority status. They have reached entire Africa and is at the doorstep of Europe. America has already said a big "NO" to who their next President will be! First, me against my brother-me and my brother against our father- my family against my cousins-my family and my cousins against the clan - the clan against the tribe - the tribe against the world -And all of us against the infidels. The present Crematorium land is a government property. Being the largest in numbers these VHP BJP RSS and other alliances have never worked out a plan to buy and own a land for the Hindu cremation rituals.
Now these VHP BJP RSS leaders have no shame to come and protest that the land should not be shared for other communities.
These leaders have children and have they ever made a school for them? Ever planned a hospital for them? Forget that ,they don’t even plan a own Crematorium land for their community. What a shame.

Wow, so many people without any work on a week-end. Wasted SUNDAY!

I think the common solution is that, instead of breeding another controversial issue it is better for the government to allocate a separate land for Muslim rather than allocating a portion of the land already owned by Hindus. Instead of people fighting against each other, all should join together as ONE and fight against the ruling government for their dirty politics!

    Saleem,
I totally second your thoughts. The District Administration should not take up any decisions that would flare up communal tension in the city.
And the district police should not act like cowards when such an inciting speech is done by anyone. Calling for riots in a public meeting is completely unacceptable.
And for those who say the hindu crematorium land belongs to govt., Yes it does. but it is already allotted to Hindus. Demanding a portion of that for Muslim burial ground is unfair. There will not be any problem if the govt. allots place somewhere else for the Muslim crematorium.
Pity that some of our secular readers have lost the capability to judge fair and unfair in this issue!

yes, I do respect your thoughts. I think Govt wants such issues to keep raising and this communal issues are always there so that they can gain the advantages. or else, already there are enough issues to sort out under communcal banner, now why should you start some new issues. Nobody is having any concern in allotting a separate area for Muslims also. Why you burn fire unnecessarily by creating this issue allotting a portion of area which is already allotted to Hindus. please. don't do any such things which will worsen the situation than calming it down. I appreciate Muslim leaders to take this positively and ask for a bigger area in a separate place , than fighting for the portion of the area which is already a Crematorium land of Hindus...

I don't think it's appropriate to compare Mangalore with a neighbouring state. If Hindu Community sees that there is a valid reason why they would preserve this land, it can be mutually discussed with the dist. Admin and a solution can be reached. Who is a minority in India. There is no minority guys, we are in the 21st Century and if we still address some fragments of the society as minority then we are referring back to 1857 Census. Mangalore has grown so much that all religions are equal. There is no minor or major. We are all responsible citizens of Mangalore, let's live in harmony. Dist. Admin should consider the sentiments of the citizens before they take any decision which might end up in major disaster. It's a very delicate issue and matured citizens participation in sorting out this matter is in need. Jai Sri Ram.

There are majority and minority community in all areas of Karnataka, except in coastal Karnataka VHP has not got that much prominence. If VHP has got some prominence in mangalore area that is because of aggressive minority which pushes majority towards these organizations. Why demand for 26 Cents and particular about it from already used cremation ground, why not ask for 2.6 acres from another area which is more convenient.

Just painting hindus always as villains won't solve any problem. It will only push the neutral ones also towards fringe groups because of insecurity created. In this forum itself while discussing on Beef why make use of words like "Gomatha" and fun of it. Many hindus like us don't have problem with any one eating beef but at the same time it is "Gomatha" for us.

In Bangalore many areas mosque and temples are clustered together but very rarely conflicts happen as both majority and minority are sensible to each other. Beef eaters and pork eaters are neighbours but they never discuss this with each other with proudness or hatredness.

We all know the fact that it's govt land but already given to Hindus as the Crematorium place. Now demanding small portion of that for your need is the problem. please try to understand. Request your leaders, MLAs to get a separate area , required enough for your future generation also and get that done. Please don't disturb the harmony by creating such problems and then showcase Hindus are acting as rowdies... please. if some one come to your compound and ask for a small portion for themselves, even you will respond like this only....nothing strange in that.

Why we are now moving towards a violence ridden society!?. These things happen when state is not in control or state too sides with violence by groups!. It may look romantic now but in the long run we may end up like Pakistan, Syria, Iraq etc where groups started movements against minorities and the state looked the other way!, when that was accomplished, these groups turned on themselves and total chaos resulted!. Do we want this!?. If we don't realise now, the price we will be paying is going to be very very heavy!.

Is there any difference in minority and majority. The question here is the minority is a section people who departed from the difference ideology, suppression, ill treatment by a section of people of the community in the region. Our Dear and beautiful City of Mangalore is known as the Rome of the East because of the educated and enlightened Christian community where all faiths flourished with perfect harmony and brotherhood. However since the last decade a few uneducated backward looking fascist forces are out to fan communal fires for their narrow and selfish short term political gains through provocative and nonsensical loose talk .The progressive and broad minded citizens should beware of these divisive and disruptive elements and thrawght their evil designs and not allow these forces to disturb the peace and harmony of our Dear and Beautiful city and duboius attempts to polarise the people on communal lines to reap their selfish political dividends.

what is the need to provoke people by demanding land from a hindu cremation ground. Cant those reich people afford to buy land of their own? why are they always trying to grab the land that belongs to others for free? appeasement politics has to stop.

Why do the muslim community of Mangalore want land for burial inside hindu crematorium ?.
They can ask for land in any other area. Why to create unnecessary tension.
    Can't we live together peacefully.
