Will continue to protest till govt drops Yettinahole project: Nalin Kumar at Uppinangady

Arun Uppinangady
Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur

Puttur, Oct 12: The four-day padayatra being undertaken by the district BJP led by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel against the Yettinaholereached Uppinangady here on Sunday October 11 night. The padayatra began on Saturday October 10 from Mangaluru and will culminate at Yettinahole on Tuesday October 13.

Addressing a public meet at Uppinangady bus stand, Nalin Kumar said, "We will continue our protest till the state government drops the Yettinahole project. We will fully support any protest that is against the project.

"We are not opposed to giving water to other districts, but instead of from Yettinahole, water could be lifted from Varahi or Sharavati river, or, let there be a facility installed to convert sea water into drinking water as in Saudi Arabia. After executing the Yettinahole project, the government is also stealthily planning to divert the Kumaradhara river too. The Green Tribunal in Chennai has ordered a stay on the project, but the government has not respected the order.

"If the project gets completed, all the electricity in the state would be needed to run it. Even the hydroelectricity projects in the state would be affected. Despite being aware of all these problems, invisible hands are working behind the state government to get execute the project. The state has still not informed the centre or the union environment ministry about the project," he added.

"The Yettinahole project is unscientific and will not even yield 4 TMC of water. It will be an injustice to the people of both Dakshina Kannada and other districts. If this project is implemented, instead of the getting water, the sand mafia in Kolar and other districts will get a boost. There were irregularities in the tender process, which should be investigated and the guilty punished. This project should be scrapped immediately, if not, the entire Dakshina Kannada will see a protest as intense as that over Kalasa-Banduri issue," he warned.

"The state government never made any effort to inform the people about the Yettinahole project. The government should scrap the project and convene a meeting with the public in the presence of experts. Voice against the project was first raised in Uppinangady and Dr Niranjan Rai and his team were responsible for it and deserve all praise. I urge everyone to support the bandh against the project on October 15," Nalin Kumar said.

Earlier, the BJP leaders and workers participating in the padayatra were accorded a rousing welcome near the Kumaradhara bridge by members of Anti Netravati River Diversion Committee led by Dr Niranjan Rai.

District BJP president Pratap Simha Nayak, former minister Krishna J Palemar, Padmanabha Kottary, Rukmayya Poojary, Monappa Bhandary, Capt Ganesh Karnik and many others were present.

They will do this until they find a new issue to protest.
The project will continue and there is no danger for western Ghat or Mangalore.
This project can lift water only if it rains and collecting rain water is not a crime.

Mr. Kateel/Poojary, please understand that in coastal district there are 10 rivers and approx 2000 TMC of water flowing to the Arabian Sea during monsoon. Why you are so jealous if 24 tmc of diverted to other needy districts for drinking/irrigation etc. You DK people not engaged in any agricultural work! Spending time in cock fight!

Our MP Mr. Nalin Kumar Niranjan Shetty Kateel don’t have any face in the parliament, why he can’t speak about this issue in the parliament?. Even though he is just 10th pass & don’t know English, Hindi, let him speak in Kannada. I still not understand why he felicitated MP No. 1 of Karnataka.
When this project approved by DVS Gowda was Mr.Kateel in the deep sleep?. Now after Mr. Janardhan Poojary started opposing this scrap project and getting good response from localities our MP suddenly got up from the deep sleep. Being an educated peoples region, we know why he is doing this Padayathra.
At the time of this project approval, Sullia/Puttur/Mangaluru South/North were under BJP & Bantwal/Belthangady/Moodabidri/Mangaluru were Congress seats. Now we need to ask Moily n DVS Gowda, what share they distributed to these MLA's & Why they not given anything to Our MP NK Kateel !!!! Mr. Kateel, this is the high time to sit on hunger strike. If at all you succeed to stop this project then you can contest in the next election.

Instead of finding a solution for peoples critical need of drinking water the politicians are engaged in making a name in the name of protest. Solution to the problem should be discussed, address and resolved by cooperating with the government. After all, water is so essential for sustaining life alongside air and food. If at all such a situation takes place in SK or Udupi Districts, what would be the alternative to supply water to people? May be we need help from other Districts or place to supply water to us. Let us think on humanitarian grounds first and political point of view later.
If nothing works out they can pump the water which is dumped by bother Gurpura and Nethravathi Rivers into the sea. Why the government cannot think of utilizing that option.

Few weeks back Union Law Minister Sadananda Gowda also reiterated that Yettinahole project will go on, no going back from our commitment!
It was during his time sanction for the project was given.
Without prejudice, what this agitators have to say on that statement?
Political parties, state as well as centre are misleading the general public in the matter of Yettinahole project!
There should be clear press statement by Centre and state on their respective stand!
