Mangaluru: Smart city - Citizens envision ring road, mono rail, free WiFi

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 12: The city corporation here had organized a public interaction at Gorakshanatha auditorium at Kadri in the city on the evening of Sunday October 11 to provide them with an opportunity to explain their dreams about smart city concept. As the city has been selected as one of those eligible to be developed into a smart city, it is prone to a change of face with added facilities and public conveniences.

Many came up with suggestions to build ring road, improve traffic conditions, build mono rail, and provide free WiFi all over the city. There were also those who insisted on road expansion, improved infrastructure, more employment-oriented companies, increasing internet bandwidth and other things. The suggestions included a plea to the citizens to develop a mindset to sacrifice their land in the long-term interests of the city, wherever it is required for development.

Rajya Sabha member, Oscar Fernandes, addressing the gathering, introduced the concept of building road over road, which he felt, would tide over the problem of traffic and pave way for smoother and speedier movement of vehicles. He also laid emphasis for reforms in the field of power consumption by way of using solar power and LED bulbs.

Local MLA, J R Lobo, noted that the city is emerging as one of the important places of India. He said that it is on the threshold of being included in the list of 20 cities which have been chosen for introduction of smart city concept. He said that there is a goal to attract investment in different fields in the coming days.

City corporation commissioner, Dr H N Gopalakrishna, explained that the last date for eliciting views from the people on what are their ideas of the smart city concept, has already been postponed. He informed, that the last date, which was given as October 5 earlier, stands revised to October 15 for the purpose. He invited people to submit their opinions to the city corporation on this issue.

A number of people including Ramaiah Shetty, Manohar Shetty, Shyam Bhat, Jagadishchandra, Vishwanath Kotekar, and Rajaram Shetty, came up with suggestions on the subject.

There should have electric trains to all the Taluks regularly to reduce on road vehicles and buses.

    Electric or diesel trains to:

    Mangalore to Udupi.
    Mangalore to Bantwal.
    Mangalore to Puttur.
    Mangalore to Sullia.
    Mangalore to Belthangady.
    Mangalore to Karkala.
    Mangalore to Kundapura.
    Mangalore to Bantwal.

The present Railway station in Mangalore should be avoided and a separate station should be made for Electric or diesel trains.

This should be handled by Karnataka government plus private sector.

Once the II world war was off the Europeans had a master plan to develop their countries.

This plan which I gave should be carried out by some independent selfless people.

On a rigerous master plan this should be carried out. The compensations to acccquire land also should be given at the market rate. So that all people will spare their land.

Finally, politicians should not be involved in this project.

They should only pass the money required to this project.

The Tourism will come automatically. The money spent on this project also can be recovered very soon.

District administration and MCC has managed a reasonable crowd this time. How much paid per head per day? Poor public response itself can be taken as an indicator to shelve the project. Mangalore as a smart city for whose benefit? Let the District administration and elected representative prioritise their actions. Withdraw open support to cartels of private players in public transport in the city, be it bus, taxi or auto. Introduce no-car day once in a week to improve awareness on using public transport system. Develop foot path and cycling tracks on major roads to dissuade people using vehicles to cover small distance. Extend unconditional support to introduction of JNURM busus in the city. The administration do not have funds to provide electricity connection to Auto booth set-up at Kankanady Railway station but the whole city is spruced-up with 20/40 Watt bulbs for Dasara. Thousand of train passengers are left to the mercy of ever greedy auto drivers. DC and elected MLS has not opened their mouth on Yettinahole project and is tacitly supporting their bosses at Bangalore. Are they with people on an issue of saving Western ghats and Nethravathi river? Common man do not seems to have any interest in smart city project as it may not give him food, shelter and cloth at affordable cost. These projects can take care of funding problems of elected representative for next two or three years. It explains why these politicians are flocking to elicit public response for smart city project?

One out of the Box suggestion. Mangalore Central station is already at a low altitude. It is already 50 feet down the Road from Attavar to Muthappan temple. Let Mangalore have an underground Urban Rail system since it is geographically have lots of ups and downs and can have a sound under ground rail system without disturbing the existing structures. Mangalore central to Surathkal and to Bantwal and to Talappady can have underground rail system.

The first & foremost requirement to make Mangalore a smart city is to change the above ground electrical installation and to make it completely under ground. Then, for a smart city, smart roads are also a pre-requisite. With present electrical distribution network, smart roads can not be thought of. Once these two basic requirements are met with, many good ideas would pour in.

I agree - Electricity underground - but protected from water logging.

Roads are to a city or nation like blood vessels to the body. If our arteries are narrow, if there is less oxygen to our muscles , the whole body suffers.
For Mangalore to become a breathable city - proper planning of roads and easing congestion are a must.
Electricity going underground can start in streets where there is constant cutting of branches of trees. This type of cutting also leads to their uprooting during rainy season as the MESCOM are not cutting them on all sides to balance the branches.
When we have internet to get us the latest designs and models of cities, their transport plans or designs, checking these online instead of employing firms with conflict of interest ( nexus with others) will compromise the smartness. If smart planning is not done - then smart city funds will go down the drains( pockets) of these modern day colonialists.

They say necessity is the mother of invention. There is necessity now and increasingly so to reduce the buses within the city limits.
We should realize now that if we DO NOT want to end up like congested Cities like Bangalore, the time to plan to avoid this is NOW!.
Best way to ease traffic congestion :
Commuter train lines from Surathkal, Padil and one from the airport. All should converge at a central station( where is a point for discussion).

All the city buses will be there for people to reach these stations( to and fro). Models from cities like Atlanta, NY Chicago etc can be obtained.

Doing this will be tremendously beneficial to the real estate too. If there is lack of space inside the city then going underground ( like these cities in the west) is the best solution.

I see only one main hurdle for this- the political will. Ultimately the politicians will choose the ones that can give them steady supply of income from these developmental projects.

If Indians spacecraft can go to Mars, If Indian Engineers, Scientists, Software people are excelling abroad- what is preventing us to develop our own cities? Why are we divided? or is it that we are not united to see the future?

If we levy hefty fines on people who break lanes, over speed, do not follow traffic discipline and park arbitrarily on the road, Mangalore will not need any flyovers etc. A smart city means a DISCIPLINED CITY that uses existing resources to improve its character. Mangalore has been a trading port since centuries and the people here are born entrepreneurs. Mangalore already was a leader in banking, tile industries, timber , cashew, pepper , Education , Health care and many more. If we follow the basics to improve safety, hygiene and be corteous to others while simultaneously emphasise on quality and skills then we are on the way to be a real smart city. We should utilise and improve our existing skill development centres like ITI's etc.while re-introducing extra circular activities in schools that encourage skill development . Simple things like planting flowering plants on the road sides/road dividers etc. and planting a lot of trees can also transform the place. The highway should be moved outside the city so that vehicular pollution and congestion will be reduced and new areas will be developed. Mandate the use of CNG transport vehicles so that the air is clean.

When you construct a fly over, road below that should be utilized, whereas in Bikarnakatta it is not possible. As a result there is only single lane towards Kulashekar and always there is traffic jam from Bikarnakatta to Kulshekar. Please pay more attention when you spend public money. When we think about 'smart city', we mainly perceive it as 'free wi-fi' place. Apart from free wi-fi connectivity, concerning authorities & governing bodies should make sure below basic requirements are delivered for a sustainable growth:
    1. Invest in quality value based education make sure wi-fi connectivity is one of the tool for quality education/knowledge sharing.
    2. Generate employment opportunities (in sectors like education, infrastructure - road, rail, power & gas, drainage, water/sanitation, public toilets etc., tourism, agriculture, dairy, horticulture, health care etc.)

However, still I do not understood what a “Smart City” is ! Is it, it is all about using solar power and LED bulbs, pave way for smoother and speedier movement of vehicles, mono rail, WiFi, ring road expansions ?

Is smart city is the notion of the smart people or is it not about clustering smart people, smart institutions, and creating an economic model that can evolve with time i.e., one can’t leave smart cities to the market, we need the courage to shape the market.
It is more important to go well with the smart political leaders than the smart technology itself.

Why nobody is bothered about moral police?

We need more public Parks & Garden to relax with family members and also for partners or couples without the fear of being attacked or assaulted by culture protectors.

What about market road and surrounding area?

The road from Jyothi to LaalBaag is a very, very busy and there is no alternative road once any accident takes place in between that road.

One Ashoka tree at Shedi Gudda Market at Karangalpady cross road plus on the middle of the road a katte and a gudi of the temple Plus auto park in between the road are obstructing vehicles movement.

Why the BJP politicians and selfish builders encroached road property for their selfishness.

Is there any solutions to this Jyothi to LaalBaag road to widen or any alternative road to reduce vehicles movements.

Crossing the road is a death Knell on this road.

Kindly look in to a alternative road for this.

FIRST BAN ANTI SOCIAL ELEMENTS LIKE

RSS, BHAJRANGDAL, RAMASENA FROM MANGALORE WHICH IS VERY ACTIVE IN SOWING HATRED BETWEEN HINDU AND MUSLIM AND CHRISTIAN FOR POLITICAL GAIN.

THEN MANGALORE BECOMES ITS OWN SMART CITY.
