Udupi, Oct 13: Austin Alva (20), the first year BCom student of KVSM College Katapady, who along with his friend Ashwin D'Souza met watery grave on October 11, was a talented, dynamic student who took part in activities related to public welfare.
The incident occured on October 11, when a group of eight youths including Austin and Ashwin, after attending a church programme for ICYM and YCS youth, went for a swim in the river at Panjimar in Pamboor. The two youths were pulled away by the currents and their bodies were retrieved soon after.
Austin took particular interest in both studies and extracurricular activities. He had donned the main role in a documentary on safe driving practices made by the students of St Mary's College Shirva in association with the district police department. District superintendent of police, Annamalai, and Shirva St Mary's College principal, Prof Rajan, had praised Austin lavishly for the role played by Austin affectively, in which he played the role of a person driving a two-wheeler in a drunken state without wearing helmet.
Obsequies connected with the death of Austin were performed on Monday October 12 evening at Pamboor Holy Cross Church. A large gathering of friends, relatives, well-wishers and sympathizers had gathered to bid adieu to the youngster, who met untimely death in an unexpected tragedy.
The villages here are shell-shocked at the fact that two youngsters from Pamboor and Bantakal in the region met watery grave together. Both of them were talented and very active.
The funeral of Ashwin D'Souza (21), is being held at Pamboor Holy Cross Chjurch on Tuesday evening, as his brother, who is stationed abroad, needs time to arrive here, family sources said.
