Kundapur, Oct 14: A student from Tumkur was found hanging at a hostel belonging to an engineering college here on Wednesday October 14 evening.

The deceased has been identified as Shashank (19), son of Gopal Gowda, from Turuvekere in Tumakuru district.

Shashank was a second year mechanical engineering student of Moodlakatte Institute of Technology.

He had completed his diploma in mechnical engineering in Turuvekere and joined the engineering college here just a month ago.

It is said that his mother passed away six months ago and he was depressed. In a death note, Shashank reportedly said that his mother would appear in his dreams every night and tell him that she wanted him to come to her.

Exams began in the college on Monday October 12, and on Wednesday, he appeared for the exam in the morning. Another exam was scheduled for the afternoon, but after lunch he did not come out of the hostel, sources said.

Later in the evening, his classmates came to his room to check on him, and on opening the door, found him hanging from the fan.

Kundapur police have registered a case.

@charles dmello , pangala. Time is relative to the observer and cease to exist for a dead person. Whatever activity exists after death works on metaphysical level and numbers are irrelevant . As the boy had strong emotional connection , let him find peace with her.

institutions fail to set up an active an vigilant counselling cell.I think all educators need to really ponder 'why the young hearts are losing hope teachers are to be trained to understand their students well.Teachers guardians can be there for a group of 10- 15 students to understand their personal and academic problems.

You are right, there should be very proactive counseling centers in such big institutions. Secondly, a person who has decided to commit suicide gives certain subtle clues much before the incident in most cases which a qualified psychologist can detect and save the person from the brink of suicide!!

BTW, I was shocked to see a post from a learned man here who was of the view that his family should have performed special pujas for his problem!!

Depression and suicidal ideation can only be cured by counseling, medications, and doing yoga and not by performing religious rituals!!

Any way he is dead. Whether he has met his mother or not will never be known....as so many births happen in the world at the same time and will never know each other...similarly so many deaths happen at the same time in the world and never know each other. To find our relatives in heaven or Hell is next to impossible...since so many people have died 1000's of year and population over there may be many times more than the worlds population...!!!!???

come on yaar. such a tragic incident and you are making fun of... just imagine the condition he was passing through, missing his mother so much that he decided to end his life. Yes, it's a stupid decision but not worthy to make fun of.

Thousands of people commit suicide in the world every day and we never know them. But we all can learn a lesson from the suicide of this teenager, a future of our country, by taking proactive action to avoid such suicides. We have succeeded in decreasing the infant mortality rate by learning the cause and taking proactive action. Do we need to wait for an advise and funding from the International Agencies. Can't we as a Nation think something of our own to reduce teenage suicide in our own country?

People with mental depression are not making logical connections and decisions - so plz dont be too harsh on someone like that... Who knows, we many also face such tough times and how we behave is surely not known! We may also become hallucinatory!

    Life is precious
    Not to spill like this
Neither to waste on useless things
Spend quality time in social welfare
Sadness is devil's weapon by which he destroys our peace and kills our precious moments
    Don't let sadness overpower us
The moment we get sad or tense devil comes with options like finding peace in intoxicants leading to self destruction. Normally teenagers are victims of sadness and loneliness
Parents need to counsel them and keep an eye on them

Lack of training in etiquette for police personnel. Dead body should be respected it is the respect for the humanity. Please use the stretcher or at least a wooden plank to carry the dead body.

I hope they have not tossed the body inside the van.

    The cop should be reprimanded.

please ban ceiling fans in hostels. table fans are the only solution. in gulf u will not find any suicide case by hanging. bcoz u will never find any hook on the roof.
some children specially boys are so attached to the mother rather than father. a child can grow happily without a father, but without a mother it is very difficult, in my case also i found very difficult to live outside without mother. later she made me understand how to live

So sad the death of young lad.
May his soul rest in peace.
Everyone needs someone very close to confide with at all times.
Counselors guide needy, specially introvert nature to develop friendship with someone at least.
    Generally family elders should.
This sort of tragedy could be avoided.

After he lost his mother, he should have done a bit extra religious ceremonies to bring peace to her soul that would have benefited him as well. He should not have simply cut short his life by being emotional.

Sir, he required somebody to talk out his emotional issues and get consoled and encouraged, not 'religious ceremonies"!! Because of such 'irrational' ideas we are taking a backseat!!!

Yes, religious ceremonies. They are doubly blessed. They bless the person to whom prayers are offered and also bless the person who offers prayers.

Religious ceremonies do not do any harm rather, I see them as sort of self-counseling. Bereaved people get solace from empathy of friends and family members who attend these ceremonies. This is my opinion.... I am not siding the religion here but believe that there is a strong reason for the ceremonies, otherwise our wise ancestors would have discontinued them.
