Mangaluru, Oct 15: Thousands of people gathered at Mahaveer circle, Pumpwell here on Thursday October 15 to raise a united voice against the controversial Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project.

The protestors sat on dharna and shouted slogans demanding the withdrawal of the project. By 12.30 pm, they were detained by the police and normal traffic was restored.

Addressing the protest, Dr Niranjan Rai of Netravati Nadi Samrakshana Okkuta said, "Our house has caught fire and we are here to douse it. We are here irrespective of religion, caste and creed with the sole intention of saving the Netravati river. This is not the end of our struggle, but the beginning.

"Our river and our culture are under threat. We should unite to save Tulunadu. The government has filed an affidavit in the Green Tribunal stating that we do not have the right to our river. Why is the government fooling the people? We are united here without any political influence and we will not indulge in politics either.

"We are not against providing drinking water to anyone but against the project which is harmful to this district. Let us unitedly work to save the Netravati river. We elected political represenatives to provide us securty and future. The government should not mislead the people. The government did not bother to consult us while finalizing the project and it is taking the issue lightly. We will continue our struggle till the project is dropped," he asserted.

Former MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty said, "Youth should get ready to fight for this cause. In 2011 when we met the then CMs Yeddyurappa and Jagadish Shettar, we had asked them not to go ahead with this project and they had asured they would not do so without consulting the people of DK. Even when the next government came to power, we met chief minister Siddaramaiah and ministers Ramanath Rai and M B Patil and requested them to consult the people of DK but they did not care to do so. I am here because of the people.

"Deputy commissioner recently held a meeting, but it was just an eyewash. In the union government report it is stated that the project should not be done without consulting the people, hence it is the responsibility of the government to so. In every situation the state government is keeping DK and Udupi aside, despite the fact that DK brings the highest income to the government and we have the capacity to demand a separate state," he added.

"This protest has my full support. Already MCC has passed a resolution against the project and all gram panchayats will also do so. This water is not for Siddaramaiah's house. Here people, fishermen and farmers will suffer if the river dries up," he said, adding that MLA J R Lobo and MLC Ivan D'Souza are the only representatives who raised a voice in the Assembly and the Council.

Sri Esha Vittaldasa Swamiji of Kemar Math said, "All the people of Tulunadu have awakened and hence we are here. This fight against this project has united all Tuluvas irrespective of caste and religion. The painful thing is that government has treated the coastal region as a laboratory for experiments. There are many unwanted projects and even as we fight against them, we have one more coming up. Stop this project or we will lay siege to Vidhana Soudha."

Sri Rajashekarananda Swamiji of Vajradehi Math, "The government should know whose pockets will be filled by this project. Siddaramaiah has come to the district many times but he has never spoken on this project."

All College Students' Union president Dinakar Shetty said, "Do not try to curb this struggle. This project is a result of vested political interests of two leaders. These leaders will be cursed by the people of this district."

M G Hegde said "The coastal region is like our mother. This protest is a warning bell to the government. Irrespective of caste and creed people have joined hands to protest. In future we will flow like river Netravati - this is a challenge to the government. In future we may also demand for a separate state, as this project will also affect Tulu civilization."

Dinesh Holla, Rahim Uchil, Odiyoor Swamiji and others also spoke on the occasion.

Dear Mr. Jeveen I am really humbled for addressing me with Respect and these theaching has come from our elderers of our Tulunadu. Since I am staying abroad but still interested in the development our motherland. I am not biased nor a blind bakta of any particular Party. For your information the first vote was casted for JAN SANGHA. THEN IT WAS CALLED. But present BJP has divided the country and created a fear among the citizens of this great country. But still u and me can rectify this problem by supporting the good things of any party and opposing the any move to wickening the common people and supporting rich who try to monopolizing the entire trade.

Could any body clarify where Yettinahole project is located. Is the project located with in the twin district or some where else. How on the earth u can demand to stop the project. Natural resources are to be distributed equally and not only for one region. Mr.Kateel and Mr. Poojari only need publicity. and that's why people did not vote for MR. poojari for his nonsense comments. Mr. Kateels votes were of PM Modi and not of his own capacity. If his thinks is so popular ,let him fight a local election. Result will show that he is not even capable winning the local election. We have so many problems to solve. Please do not waste your energy on Yettinahole or any insignificant subject. LET US ALL JOIN TOGETHER TRY TO MAKE A GREAT INDIA subject

Our honourable CM and his still under deep slumber in spite of all these strike,Gherao,Dharana, potest regardless of caste, religion, creed, language and political affiliation. All Tulunada people are united to save Yettinahole project.Government has not yet awakened. How nice is to see all the Tulunadu people in this picture under one umbrella. This is the strong message to the government to wake from their sleep. This is big conspiracy to cheat the people of twin district.I would suggest to form and fight for separate TULUNADU.Days are not too far.

I wish our native from Kenjar Village residing at bank of Phalguni river would have taken part in protest against sand mining to protect the river as well as collapsing land due to removal of sand.. but unfortunately the gram panchayat member who was kept elected for long time now showing his reality face distracting peace of the people living by a part of kenjar village... And cause of the political support even DC kept quite and playing defence game...
Hope all people wake up get together before it gets too late...

I am against YettinaHole project, but I suggest all of my brothers/sisters that our ministers, concerned Govt officials will not get alert on this kind of protest, strike, speech etc. I will give one good idea that all mangalore people should be united and shall oppose to pay Corporation Tax, Water Bill, Electricity bill etc till this project gets cancelled by the State Govt. meagre 1000 nos of Govt officials can be difficult to face lakhs together people's demand & protest. Stop giving revenue to the Govt, then Govt automatically bends to the request of the people...democracy for the people, by the people & with the people...

    Mr. Ahmed
    This project cost is 13000crs
They are planing to divert the excess rain water based on wrong calculations to other parts of the state.
They will destroy thousands of acres rain forest and also try to change the western ghat's foundation plate which is natural reservoir of rain water.
Everyone has a feeling that if they break the nature plate it will destroy forever and it will be able to hold the rain water once it is disturbed
So this project is approved without proper feasible study and huge loss of water may cause in future.
Mr. Poojary has filed a complaint against this project, now all parties joined together which is great news to protect our mother nature

    Respected Arthur Ronald D'souza

YOUR ALLEGATION IS 100% BASELESS AND FAR FROM TRUTH..

D V Sadananda Gowda has not given his nod for survey of the project.

It is false allegation that Mr Gowda started the project.

He had just given the nod for the survey of the project to study the pros and cons only.

BUT CONTRACTOR'S PAID HUGE AMOUNT TO PARTY FUND AND KAI GOVT NOW REFUSE TO SCRAP....

Good to see that the people of DK being united after the long time fighting for some noble cause... Let this be a warning bell to the respective government and also the elected members that they cannot take the people of the DK just for granted....

The People of the district who are residing in the other part of the state too must intensify the agitation against the project...
The agitation must be such like " Kaveri Issue" that it forces the government to scrap the project...
