17-year-old Ria Vithasha returns Karnataka state Sahitya award

Bengaluru, Oct 15 (PTI): For 17 year-old Ria Vithasha, who has authored five novels, the killing of senior Kannada writer M M Kalburgi distressed her enough to take the decision to return her Karnataka Sahitya Academy award.

Vithasha, known by her pen name Muddu Thirthahalli, whose novel "Kaada Haadiya Hoogalu" has been adapted into an award-winning film, said she was "pained" that the killers of Kalburgi had not yet been caught and punished.

"I knew Kalburgi from childhood and have read all his books. I cried a lot when he was killed and wanted to return my award but my parents told me to have patience and wait. Now so much time has elapsed and still there is nothing being done so like the other writers have done, I have returned my award," Vithasha said in halting Hindi.

The young writer, who is a PU II (Class 11)student, was conferred the award for her 2011 collection of essays "Ondu Chandrana Tundu".

Vithasha's mother Lydia D'Mello said her insistence to return the award came after hearing Kannada writer Chandrashekar Patil decided to return his Pampa award, one of the highest literary honors conferred by the Department of Kannada and Culture of Karnataka.

"She was close to Kalburgi and had attended many functions in his hometown Dharwad. She wanted to do something when she heard of his killing but we advised her to have patience," D'Mello said.

It looks like many do not understand the purpose of returning the award. They are mixing up the apples and oranges. Why someone has to return the award for riots, murders and rapes taking place every day.

Please note that the purpose of returning the award is for murdering one of the awardee among them for his freedom of expression and Sahithya Academy's culpable silence in condemning the murder.

Noted Kannada writers have criticized the religions in the past and people have protested against it. I remember Christians have protested Dr.Shivarama Karanth's writing against Christians. He said, if you don't like my writings, you burn my book. No one murdered him, rather many Christian dignitaries have attended his funeral

I respect the decision of a teenager Ria returning her award and even support the abolition of the Academy itself, if it doesn't stand for basic fundamental rights of writers.

All the best to a budding writer Ria.

Pius u have rightly said. All these people lobbied for award for many years and now de had sudden awakening or gyaan. And who are these people who returned the award. All so called intellectuals. De had no conscience when Sikhs were butchered or during Gujarat riots or when Josephs hand was chopped off. Then no one pointed out silence of Academi. When owaisi gives fanatic speches or when Azam reigns terror then these were sleeping. When Dabolkar was killed no writer had consience. Dont take advantage of the tolerant nature of Hindus. There are many here who sit in gulf but give half local names and talk big things about comunal people infiltrating the police and army. These people no guts to talk what happens in their land. But India me sub kutch chaaltaaa hai yaar. This minority communalism is equally dangerous. try to live with majority in peace.

Also may be in future when ever somebody is awarded , govt should take an undertaking signed letter that for any communal or other stupid reasons the award could be returned. Who gave the permission to the writers, intellectuals to defame, target, hurt the religious sentiments, feelings of Hindus in the name of freedom of speech & expression? Why only Hindus? Because they are peace loving, tolerant and soft targets. Those who returned their awards are all anti Hindus and they have been rewarded for being anti Hindu. They would have got support from the masses if they returned awards against farmer suicides but all of them are so selfish. Thousands of farmers committing suicides on daily basis but nobody cares.
Those who returned their awards are all opposite party leaning politicians who enjoyed a lot with the tax payer money from past 65 years & they can't digest MODI becoming more and more famous day by day. So they want anyhow to defame him but masses are with MODI not with these bunch of writers. No shortage of writers in India being a populus country. Return all your awards, certificates, money, free sites , flats, bunglows offered by Government, black money & return foreign bank accounts along with black money, BPL card, LPG subsidy if any.

@ Prashanth Kumar,Kundapur, You should have wisdom to understand the reality because the words and your thoughts don't give proper meaning... but the following words.. if you can read may be your real Heart will feel because on young and tender age.. she got the award,it's great Achievement and the higher Authority mean it while they give award and she deserved for that and she sacrificing for the better cause with love and respect and you should appreciate..instead of you write in a sarcastic way...? ? ? clever people will think while they right but those who think bad/Evil only right what they do not know the meaning (it's not a Fun)...so read here....

" But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked ". Amen

Why there was no protest when many of communal incidents happened prior to this govt?
It only says they were expecting a hung parliament but unfortunately God had other plans. When all of their attempts failed to destabilise the present government which is impossible due to single party majority, this is a new attempt by psuedo Seculars along with Psuedo Secular political parties to give a bad name to the Government & the Country.
No matter what they do TRUTH WILL, SHALL PREVAIL. Psuedo Seculars enjoyed enough from past 65 years, now it's time to develop the country & have employment opportunities for the youth, educate the masses & eradicate poverty. We have seen enough dramas with the title "SECULAR".

She is yet to vote but is ready to take a political position. Did some one care to ask her if she knows Congress is ruling in Karnataka and what did it do to save Prof Kalburgi ?

This is a civilised way of protest and display of displeasure with the government who rules with double standard. So, there is no point in receiving the award and recognition from the government who has no regard for the writer and their views in a civil society. This is not the end, indian government have to answer UNESCO for this unfortunate event and for not taking appropriate measures to avert this situation. Remember PEN is MIGHTIER than sword..

You are one more Kundapura supporting terrorism. Another Kundapura/Bengaluru is missing in this forum from last December 2014 or so.
