Will act against those who heckled Australian over tattoo: Police

Bengaluru, Oct 19 (IANS) : A top police official said here on Monday that if found guilty, they will act against those who heckled an Australian man for sporting a tattoo of a Hindu goddess on his leg.

The Australian citizen was heckled in this tech hub during the weekend by BJP activists for sporting a tattoo of Hindu goddess Yellamma on his leg, a senior police official said on Monday.

"Though the Aussie (Matthew Gordon, 21) did not file a complaint so far, we have taken the incident seriously and will act against them (activists) if found guilty," Bengaluru deputy commissioner of police Sandeep Patil told reporters here.

The heckling occurred at Konark restaurant in the city's downtown when Gordon from Melbourne was spotted with the tattoo on the shin of his left leg seated at a table along with his girl friend Emily Kassianou, 20, also from Melbourne.

"A dozen activists walked up to me and threatened to skin my leg if I did not remove the tattoo and apologise to them, as it was hurting their religious sentiments," Patil quoted Gordon telling his juniors outside the eatery later.

Police collected video footage of the incident from the restaurant's closed circuit television camera (CCTV) to examine for investigation.

"It was lunch time (2 p.m.) and we did not want to disturb other guests in the hotel. We told him (Gordon) outside that he should remove the tattoo, as it was insulting to have our goddess image on legs," activist Ramesh Yadav said.

To avoid causing inconvenience to the public, a beat constable took the activists and the Australian duo to a nearby police station to sort out the issue amicably.

"We warned Gordon that he would get into trouble if anyone sees him in public place with a goddess image on his leg and advised him to remove it for his safety," Yadav recalled.

They also lectured the Australian duo on Hindu religion and how its gods and goddesses were venerated by the people.

Incidentally, Yadav contested in the city civic election in 2010 on a BJP ticket and lost.

Bengaluru: Mob harasses Australian national over tattoo of Goddess

Bengaluru, Oct 19 (Agencies): What was supposed to be a normal day out turned into a harrowing experience for an Australian national and his friend as they were abused and harassed by an unruly crowd in Bengaluru on Saturday. The issue was a tattoo of goddess Yellamma on his shin.

Matt Keith and his friend Emily were accosted and heckled by the mob outside a restaurant on Residency Road, reported Times of India. A group of over 25 gathered at the eatery and did not allow the couple to leave.

The Ashoknagar police, who arrived on the spot, took Matt and his friends to the police station, where he was allegedly forced to write an apology letter.

Matt was quoted in The Hindu saying, 'The policemen advised me on Hindu religion and insisted I give a written apology for not covering my goddess tattoo, even as the group just watched. I tried taking law points, but had to finally give in as my girlfriend was in tears as the cops wouldn’t let us go.'

Matt, who also has a Ganesha tattoo on his back, said that he didn't want to stay in Bengaluru anymore and that he shouldn't be victimised for following his spiritual journey and the markings on his body.

slightly different thought. Than blaming the foreigners for this, how about to blame our own Indian friend who has put that Tattoo in their body. Our folks are ready to put the god's picture in their body , then obviously foreigners will go for it right. First let's learn the holiness of our God and start respecting it. then only we can expect others respect our god.

I advice the Aussie Mr.Matthew Gordon, 21 & his girl friend to leave not only Bangalore but even India as soon as possible. If they stay then it may cost their lives.

& before you travel to other countries try to learn not to harm the religious beliefs of that country.
    good luck.

    Akash,

What really happened to indians in australia that would`nt happen to them in india? Please dont blow things out of proportion.

There were 120,913 Indian students enrolled to undertake an Australian qualification in 2009.In the year 2007-2008, 1,447 Indians had been victims of crime including assaults and robberies in the state of Victoria in Australia. However, the statistics reportedly show that Indians were not over represented in assaults.

On 29 April 2008, in Melbourne an estimated five hundred Indian taxi drivers protested at Flinders Street Station with a sit-in protest following the stabbing of a taxi driver.A similar protest was held on 19 May 2008 in Adelaide, where about fifty taxi drivers protested after an assault on an Indian taxi driver. - Again one taxi driver getting stabbed. that might happen in india atleast daily.

Another student was stabbed in the bowel on 5 November 2010 in Melbourne. He required emergency surgery in the hospital with 26 stitches. Police reported that they believed the attack to have been random, rather than racially motivated.

A woman in her early 40s has died after being attacked in a public walkway in Parramatta Park, near Westmead- which is random. you know women are also attacked here in india on a daily basis.

Please read a little and educate yourself.

How many attacks and lynching on the Indians in India by the street goons? Are you justifying the attacks of the Australians undertaken by some street goons in Bangalore? Now the whole world knows about the great BJP agenda and their hidden manifesto!

The firangis should be rightly counseled that just like mother Mary is worshiped in their religion, many godesses are worshiped in Hindu religion by locals and their place is not onto their feet or torso. The cops should have caught the tatto maker if he was local to bell the cat..This is a case of cultural arrogance and the tattoo maker is the real culprit here. The masses of Hindu religion or any religion for that matter may not understand that a deity or face is merely an individual expression of a way to the one and only truth. They should be counseled and given the example of the Danish cartoonist.

Like the West and mass media had portrayed fanatic Islamic groups which affected the Islam to a great extent, now the same will happen to Hindu religion. Tolerance is disappearing now in our society and do not cry when the black lash happens. Police could have acted wisely instead of harassing the couple.
