Bengaluru, Oct 22 (DHNS): Barely three days after landing a job in a cash replenishing agency in the City, a 21-year-old youth decamped with Rs 50 lac after hoodwinking his unsuspecting colleagues from near a bank on MG Road on Wednesday.
The youth, Mahesh, is a resident of Nandini Layout and is employed with Brinks Arya.
On Wednesday, he accompanied his colleagues in a vehicle to deposit cash in various banks around the City.
Around noon, when his senior colleague went to deposit money at IndusInd Bank at Centenary Building, Mahesh made away with Rs 50 lakh that was in a box inside the vehicle. The police are now on the lookout for the youth, son of an autorickshaw driver.
Police said that around noon, Mahesh, the second custodian of the cash, along with the first custodian Manjunath, gunman Muthanna and driver Prabhu arrived at the IndusInd Bank on the busy MG Road, off Webbs’ junction.
Manjunath took some cash from the box, which contained over Rs 1 crore, and went inside the bank to deposit it. Mahesh, Muthanna and Prabhu were sitting in the vehicle.
Mahesh, who had the keys of the cash box, took out the money from the box and started putting it into his backpack. The gunman, on seeing Mahesh fidgeting, asked him what was going on.
Mahesh told him that he was getting the cash ready to take it inside the bank. But none suspected that Mahesh was putting the cash into his bag.
Mahesh filled his bag with Rs 50 lac and told the gunman and the driver that he would be going to the toilet. But he fled from the spot. Manjunath returned from the bank and found Mahesh missing.

The gunman told him that Mahesh had gone to the toilet. Manjunath counted the cash and found that Rs 50 lac was missing. He searched for Mahesh but in vain. He alerted the gunman and the driver and they, too, looked for Mahesh frantically. They alerted their seniors and bank officials.
On being alerted, the Ulsoor police visited the spot and obtained CCTV footages. “We have contacted his father who is an autorickshaw driver. His parents are shocked. His mobile phone is switched off and we are trying to track him. We have recorded the statements of Manjunath, gunman and driver,” said a police officer.
The officials from the agency have lodged a complaint against Mahesh.
