Udupi: Colourful celebrations mark Rajyotsava, Sorake lists out plans

Udupi, Nov 1: The Udupi district administration celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava with pomp and fanfare at MGM grounds here on Sunday November 1.

Udupi district incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake received the guard of honour and hoisted the flag.

Addressing the gathering, he said that the state government had initiated several schemes and projects for the welfare of the people.

"Our government is concerned about protecting the interest of farmers. We are determined to develop agriculture and increase the income of farmers. The government is giving more importance to agricultural production. Under the agricultural machinery programme, 1,558 machines have been distributed in Udupi district for which the government has spent Rs 7.25 crore.

"The government is trying hard to stop farmer suicides in the state, and also providing support to bereaved families with all facilities to boost their morale," he added.

"Under the tourism department, educated unemployed youths from backward and minority communities will be provided financial help and tourist taxis for self-employment. The government has also released Rs 54 lac for this for the year 2015-16," he said.

"For the students of SC/ST communities, the government has sanctioned Rs 19.98 lac for educational tour of Karnataka this year.

"To improve roads in rural areas, the government has proposed an action plan worth Rs 10.32 crore. The work is being implemented. Also, a project worth Rs 21.43 crore is being taken up for water supply in rural areas.

"Five villages in each of the five Assembly constituencies have been selected under Gram Vikas programme, and each of these villages will be developed at Rs 75 lac. Altogether, an action plan of Rs 3.75 crore has been prepared. Under Indira Awaz scheme, 409 houses have been completed this year. In 2015-16, we aim to build 1,754 houses for the poor and the work is in progress. So far, 1,222 beneficiaries have been selected under this scheme.

"In an effort to abolish the caste system, the government will provide Rs 2 lac to a SC youth who marries a woman from another caste, and Rs 3 lac to a SC woman who marries a man from another caste," he added.

He also said that to uplift the Koraga community, 29 auto rickshaws and five tourist cars have been sanctioned for 17 families.

"Social security programmes have been effectively implemented. Under Sandhya Suraksha, 56,912 beneficiaries, under widow pension programme 32,953 beneficiaries, under Manaswini programme 2,252 benficiaries, under Maitri programme 21, under old age pension 3,879, under physically handicapped scheme 13,688 beneficiaries have been given pensions," he said.
"Under cyclone distaster management, a total of 29 fishing roads of 30.40 km ha been constructed at a cost of Rs 23.05 crore. Also, three bridges worth Rs 12,05,000 and 2 cyclone shelters worth Rs 4 crore will be constructed to provide security for coastal residents."

"In Udupi district under Namma Grama Namma Raste third phase, work on 102 km stretch of road at a cost of Rs 93 crore in 38 villages is going on. As many as 6,000 fishermen have been given loans of Rs 50,000 at an interest of 2 percent from nationalized banks," he said.

He also said that ahead of the Paryaya celebrations in January 2016, all municipal roads will be developed at a cost of Rs 12.5 crore under a special grant, and a proposal in this regard has been sent to the government.

A procession from service bus stand to MGM grounds with various tableaux including on one Invest Karnataka - 2016 was a special attraction of the celebrations. The district Rajyotsava Awards were conferred on 21 achievers.

DC R Vishal, SP Annamalai, MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, ZP president Savitha Shivananda Kotian, CMC president Jeevaraj and others were present.
