Mangaluru, Nov 3: Regional Transport Authority (RTA) on Tuesday November 3 commenced a month-long drive to reduce and control air pollution, at the RTA office here.

AGM of State Bank of India R N Kulkarni symbolically inaugurated the programme ‘Air pollution control month’ by lighting the lamp.

In his inaugural speech R N Kulkarni said, “Our country is suffering from pollution. In fact it has become the capital of pollution. About 10 lac people are losing their lives every year due to pollution in India. It is our responsibility to preserve and protect our environment. State and central governments alone cannot do this work. Cooperation from the public is necessary. Inhaling of polluted air has resulted in decreasing quality of life. We cannot eliminate pollution completely, but it can be reduced by taking necessary measures. We should keep our vehicles in good conditions thereby maintaining good health for ourselves. As a bank we are discouraging buying of second hand vehicles by imposing high interest rate on loans for such vehicles and less payback period. I request everyone to join hands with the RTO in protecting our environment from pollution."

Assistant regional transport officer G S Hegde, who presided over the programme, said, "The task of controlling air pollution is given to RTA because the highest air pollution is caused by vehicles. We cannot stop the registration of vehicles. There are about 4,000 vehicles registered every month at Mangaluru RTA. But necessary steps can be taken to protect the environment. Enforcement of rules is necessary but along with that concern from the public is also important. Out of the 30 polluted cities in the world, about 14 cities are in India."

"Good driving habits need to be followed. Keeping the engine off while the signal is off for more than a minute can contribute little to reduce pollution. We request everyone to conduct emission test and keep their vehicles in good condition so that the environment is protected," he added.

District pollution controlling officer Rajshekar Puranik said, "About 60% air pollution is done by vehicles and rest by the industries. We should try to use public transport. There are two types of pollution - air and noise - which occur due to vehicles. Government has taken necessary steps and public needs to cooperate to save the environment."

Aroor Kishore Rao unveiled the handbills on air pollution control.

A good move - INDEED A GOOD MOVE by the R.T.O. It is possibly to reduce the pollution in the City by strictly enforcing law and making sure that all vehicles and more particularly diesel run buses and trucks observe the rule regarding pollution. What a good move by The state Bank by restricting availability of loans to by second hand cars.

I appreciate the drive. But question is Is it only the duty of RTA ? or Air Pollution take place because of vehicles ? According to me RTA wants to collects more revenue by fining vehicles - not having Emission certificate. Now there is no much revenue finning two wheelers for not wearing helmets. Because almost all two wheelers helmets.Further Revenue from finning for seat belt also reduced. So RTA / RTO is finding one more way to generate revenue - in name of Pollution Control - finning not having Emission certificate. EVery six months all vehicles owners should get Emission Certificate else you will be finned. Why our Pollution Control Board sleeping when industries are creating problem ? Why they are not acting ? what way we are saving our environment? Why our forest Department is sleeping ? Let them submit a monthly report to the public on the activity they conducted - Pollution Control / Saving tree, Growing Trees.

RTA has easy prey - KSRTC buses. Compare the smoke emitted from the exhaust pipes of KSRTC buses and other buses. It is 10 times more in the former. But will the RTA act!? It looks as if KSRTC buses undergo pollution check only on the assembly line. Here is an opportunity for RTA to earn crores of rupees as fine.

Air pollution and sound pollution from vehicles can be completely eliminated with a concept change.
Instead of spending on fuel, considerable volume of free and clean energy can be generated.
The heavy burden of commuters and goods on wheels can be used as a powerful pushing force.
The opportunity is to reduce fuel consumption and save huge saving of funds.
A simple idea can solve severe problems of SurfaceTransport Sector.
The need is to think different and implement change.
While mobile revolution, why automobile to miserably by evolution?

I have seen in the past "Run for Greenery", "Run for Water Harvesting, "Run for clear Air", "Run for Healthy Heart" etc etc and all these happens only for a day and after that it is a forgotten issue. Now we are having month long drive to control air pollution in Mangalore. This is the biggest joke. First of all RTA should release the Data has to how many new vehicles are being registered every day, how many vehicles which are 5 and 10 years old are being renewed every year and what steps RTA has taken to stop renewing vehicles which are above 10 years old. 80% of the vehicles in Mangalore are diesel and they are the biggest polluters, many of the residential and business houses are air conditioned and the compressors are biggest polluters, our city is converted into concrete jungle thereby greenery being wiped out, noise pollution where drivers from private buses and cars cause heavy pollution. Hence having month long drive is not the solution. How are we going to implement the rules that such pollution are not created. Will RTA stop registering cars that are run on Diesel fuel. They will not. So time to think and time to act seriously. Mangalore city is filled and congested with vehicles which does not suit it road infrastructure.

True & add to it the trend of apartments with 24 hour power supply with diesel gensets & power outage causing generators in commercial buildings & shops spewing direct emission on to the road & commuters has to be controlled & stopped to ease the pollution as well.

lot of potential here in Mangalore on this area. Lot of pollution. Above air pollution I feel we have noise pollution. Now also I am hearing bloody so irritating horns by bus drivers. Just come and stand near some places like Lalbagh, Urvastore , kottara and also places like Bykampady and surathkal. Drivers play with their horns... to make the front bus driver to move from the stand they keep pushing the horns... whole public around are feeling so irritated , but this joker ( driver ) will keep holding his horn until the other bus driver moves. So, welcome to the initiative and let these evil creatures of the society called drivers learn lesson during this period. Penalize them lest and right that they think twice before horning.

I think its required to stop the smoke emitting vehicles those are plying on our roads belching smoke onto our faces. That can be the most appropriate initiative that can be taken. Proofs of such vehicles can be found on our page facebook.com/antipollutiondrive or www.antipollution.org
