Mangaluru, Nov 7: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) celebrated its 10th graduation with a colourful ceremony at the College premises in Vamanjoor here on Saturday November 7.

The programme began with the invocation by the college choir.

Chief guest of the programme Prof K Byrappa, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University distributed degree certificates to around 556 students of engineering, MBA, MCA, and MTech. The first PhDs were also awarded to students from SJEC Research Centers.

Addressing the gathering, Prof K Byrappa said, "I congratulate all the graduates who received degrees today. From today you all are independent graduates. My sincere advice to outgoing students is that choose the career you like. Every individual has a hidden talent, explore your talent and choose career you like. Don't take up a career out of compulsion. Be honest and dedicated to the career you choose and success will follow you, this is what I have seen in most of the successful people. Degree does not mean you have learned everything, it just makes you independent. Be innovative and never think of instant success in your path.

"You should be happy to have graduated from this great institution. St Joseph group of institutions has a special place in the hearts of Mangalureans. Emulate the culture of hard work that you have learnt from this institution in your workplace. This is a beautiful campus with all the amenities needed for a congenial environment for learning. Do not forget your professors and Alma Mater after you have reach good position. Meet them sometime and do something for your Alma Mater. Carry forward the values you have learnt from this institution. Always remember and be grateful to your parents for giving you good education. I congratulate the faculty and management of this college on getting 93 percent result, it is a great accomplishment. I have visited many colleges, and in all of them the results always range from 70-100 percent. This is the first institution where the lowest result is 93 percent and the highest 100 percent. I would like to give a tip to the management - encourage your faculty to earn PhD degrees. This is the way you can take this institution to the next level," he said.

Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, bishop of Mangaluru and president of SJEC in his presidential address said, "I am indeed happy to be part of your celebration on achieving a great milestone in your life, the graduation day. I congratulate all the graduates who have been awarded degrees in this august gathering. My congratulations and appreciation to your parents too, who have sacrificed so much to give you good education. I appreciate the principal, director, assistant director and all the faculty members who have contributed so much to this institution. You were just students of this college until today, but from now on you will be our brand ambassadors. Our former President the late A P J Abdul Kalam is an inspiration to all of us, for his humility, simplicity and hard work. He said "You have to dream before your dreams can come true" and "suffering is the essence of success". This degree is just a stepping stone to reach the next level, you have long way to go. I congratulate all of you and wish success in your future endeavours".

Guest of honour Melwin D'Silva, regional manager of Air India said, "I congratulate the graduates who are being awarded degrees today. It is a special day for all the graduates as you will be passing out from college and looking back on the good memories of your student life. It is a day to anticipate what you want to be in future. Till today you were being taught by teachers, you had books for reference. But from today real practical study starts. There are five Ps of success which I have followed in life and which helped me a lot. They are - Passion for the career you have chosen. If you have passion, you will be successful. Next is power - power of knowledge. Technology is changing every day and you need to be up to date. Third, planning - plan what you want to be in the coming two years. Dreaming alone is not enough, you need to work towards turning it into reality. Fourth P stands for people. In any organization, team work is very important. You need to have empathy for your co-workers. The fifth is prayer - when you are at the crossroads and have to make a decision, prayers will help a lot. Go build your future, build relationship and maintain honesty. I congratulate all the graduates, parents and faculty members."

Chief guest of the programme Prof K Byrappa and guest of honour Melwin D'Silva were felicitated on the occasion.

Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza awarded the toppers in academics and top performers in sports.

The welcome address was given by Fr Joseph Lobo, director of St Joseph Engineering College while Rajesh P C, convenor of SJEC thanked the gathering.

Principal Dr Joseph Gonsalves, vice-pricipal Rio D'Souza and assistant director Fr Rohit D'Costa of St Joseph Engineering College and others were present.
