Bengaluru: Siddu comes out with 'Shoe Bhagya' for school children

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Dec 28: It is now the turn of "Shoe Bhagya" for all children studying in State Government schools from the next academic year.

The State Cabinet at its end-of-the-year meeting presided over by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru on Monday decided to supply a pair of shoes and two pairs of socks at the time of re-opening of schools next June 2016.

As many 48 lakh schoolchildren studying in government schools from class 1 to class 10 will be eligible for the Shoe Bhagya programme.
The entire exercise is expected to cost a whopping Rs 120 crore to the State exchequer.

The School Development Monitoring Committees would be given responsibility of distributing shoes and socks.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Karnataka’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra said the cost of each pair of shoes and two pair of socks of students of Class I to Class 5 cost Rs 225.

The cost would be Rs 250 for students of class 6 and 8 and Rs 275 for students of Class 9 and 10 respectively.

The State Cabinet has already decided to provide free bicycles to class 8 students studying in government and aided schools.

The total cost of the supply of bicycles would be Rs 188 crore.

Term of SIT into illegal mining extended

The State Cabinet decided to extend the term of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was formed to probe corruption in illegal mining, one more year. The term of the SIT would end on January 24, 2016. The SIT was formed under anti-corruption ombudsman Lokayukta to look into illegal mining in the state. The issue of regularisation of encroached forest lands (deemed forests) has been deferred to the next cabinet. The State Government has proposed to regularize lands up to three acres that encroached upon before 1978.

Other Cabinet decisions:

* Rs 28 crore sanctioned for modernisation Shimsha Canal (20.4 km).
* Decision deferred on revision of Bangalore Golf Club’s ground rent.
* State Government to guarantee Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited for raising Rs 335 crore loan.
* KSFC one-time settlement offer for borrowers up to Rs 10 lakh.
* Approval for Rs 3550 crore for upgrading 4315 km of state highways under Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project

Mr. Mohammed, we have been to govt schools, walking many kilometers bare foot, books on our head, whether it is raining or hot sunshine, we have seen it all, we have come up in life through our own effort, not govt support or help, they did nothing for us than low quality mid day meal.

Giving shoes to school children is not a good scheme, first give proper text books, note books, chalk, pencil, eraser and required stationary, shoe is the last thing govt schools need, the standard of education is pathetic state, no proper teachers, no proper bench.

Sleeping CM should look at providing these first, his intention is only to gain votes, through these schemes, and not helping the poor to improve their standard of living.

He should have done a proper research before announcing the scheme or taking a cabinet decision, he himself should have visited various govt schools around the state, see the condition, announce schemes to provide school needs, than shoes.

You check the quality of rice provided by govt under anna bhagya, there are more stones in the rice than rice grains, in-stood of giving these bhagya's spend money on improving school education, opening training centers, establish industries were priority is given to poor students to get employment, so that they can stand on their own feet and earn their living, than stretching their hands for free bees, if you implement cheap bhagy's, poor will remain poor & dependent on govt free bees, this is what congress has been doing for past 60 years.
They want poor to be poor & uneducated.

This is what we hate, we are not against constructive schemes which will help poor to come up in life than dependent.

Even in these schemes they will make differences as majority & minority, play caste card, which they have been doing in Shaadi bhagy.

What bothers in me in the comment section here is a mockery of such good scheme Well, at least good to begin with. Its very easy for us to comment sitting in a foreign land, in a fine cubic, with air conditioner at our finger tip and Suit and shoe of a fine quality. But the misery and plight of those 4 million children is something that we could never understand. I agree, we do lack quality education, infrastructure etc. But somewhere something has begun to benefit the poor kids. Lets appreciate that and hope for a good future of those kids.

In addition to the numerous other Bhagyas implemented in Karnataka, let's hope that we get 'GOOD ROADS BHAGYA', so that (avoidable) road accidents, environmental pollution, waste of time, energy, fuel and wear & tear of vehicles (as well as of drivers & commuters) are reduced and productivity is increased.

Let's also try to bring about a reduction in 'bogus road works bhagya' and 'corruption bhagya'.

    Jai Karnataka, Jai Bharat!

It’s a good scheme, There are lot of children who’s parents can’t afford decent footwear and have to go with torn or Bare foot to schools.
Anything done to encourage education should be appreciated. Books, Fees, Uniform and Shoes needed for under privilege has to be supported by government.

By giving free he is making next generation highly lazy. Quality of education these days very very poor. All the students will pass 10th standard without any effort. Very few people in the society know addition subtraction multiplication and division. You can judge future society of Karnataka. He can only make society incompetent, alcoholic, unproductive and useless.

Instead of distributing freebees Siddu must incentivise the well performing students which will generate in students a healthy competition to excel in studies. Only then they have a chance to do something constructive in their lives. Otherwise they will never understand the value of earning their livelihood.

The need of the hour is quality education in government schools (all Kannada medium schools for that matter) and not "Bhagyas". I remember the school where I studied had around 400 students and now has only 40 students. What is the reason? When we can have internationally competitive Engineering Colleges run by government (IITs and NITs) why not to have similar schools and other colleges?

Providing shoes and socks to poor schoolchildren free of cost is indeed an excellent scheme. It would have been better if good quality shoes had been provided at confessional and affordable rates. Can you please explain which of the schemes of Modi had been useless? Jan Dhan Yojna and Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme have entered Guinness Book of World Records.

First of all it is very important to provide free education to all Govt School students up to grade 12 (2nd PUC) including books, uniform, mid day meal and sanitary facilities and drinking water in the school. Then provide free commute arrangements (best means is to provide free bicycles) so students can travel from long rural regions. If this is done then I welcome the move towards providing shoes. In this case the Govt should provide two pairs of shoes one to use in the rainy season and the other during the normal dry season. Hope the scheme will be successful and poor children benefit.

well if anyone of you commenting have seen kids going to school with out a pair of shoes or slippers in sun and rain- for sure you would appreciate the offer.. so don't simply comment for the sake of it .. how this is going to be implemented and who take advantage of it is totally another issue... At least State is making a offer whereas the central is not even doing anything other than its promise long time ago .. and seems people have forgotten about already..

Shoe Bhagya, Anna Bhagya only diminish the abilities of people and does not increase their purchasing power... Can we think in this positive direction???
