Beltangady, Jan 6: In a rare occurrence, three buffalo thieves were sentenced and fined by the court here. In most of the animal theft cases, accused succeed in going Scot free.

Abdul Hameed from Ballingeri House, Hosangady village, Muhammed from Hosangady, and Hyderali belonging to Moodukody village have been found guilty of charges levelled against them. They had been nabbed when illegally transporting four stolen animals in a truck at Arambody village. Venoor police, who had registered a case against them, had also conducted investigation and filed charge sheet.

Additional judge of the court, Jaishankar, who conducted hearing in the case, imposed a fine of Rs 2,250 to each of the convicts, failing payment of which they have been ordered to undergo a month's imprisonment.

Assistant public prosecutor, G K Kiran Kumar, had argued the case on behalf of the prosecution. It is gathered that the accused, who tried to prove that they had nothing do with the incident of theft, got trapped during cross examination by providing varying answers.
