Udupi, Jan 14: District superintendent of police (SP), K Annamalai, informed that gazette notification that has made it mandatory for all riders and pillion riders of two-wheelers in the state to wear helmets was published in the state gazette on January 1. He said that with effect from January 20, this rule will be scrupulously enforced in the district, and those who fail to wear helmets will end up paying fine.
He gave this information at a press conference he addressed at his office on Wednesday January 13. "In most parts of the state, this rule was implemented from January 12 onward, but we have given additional time here. Those who do not wear helmets will have to pay fine of Rs 100," he explained. About the rule of helmet being made mandatory for children, he said he would provide clarification after consulting the regional transport office.
Annamalai revealed that he received the gazette notification about helmet rule on Tuesday night, and to enable people to buy helmets, leverage has been given to them till January 19. He added that information about this would be spread by the department through Whatsapp, Facebook, and other websites.
The SP said that there is no specification that helmets worn by riders should bear ISI Mark, adding that any good quality helmet will serve the purpose. He urged those travelling by two-wheelers to realize that wearing of helmets is in their own interests. He added that a programme of distributing helmets by Lions Club is being held on January 15, and that the helmet rule will be strictly applicable to even police personnel with effect from January 20.
