Mangaluru: Expert PU College celebrates Vivekananda Jayanti

Mangaluru, Jan 14: Vivekananda Jayanti, commemorating the 153th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda was celebrated at Expert PU College, Valachil in total compliance with the instruction of Karnataka PU Education Board. A special lecture on Swami Vivekananda and an essay competition on the theme 'the relevance of Swami Vivekananda's message in the present world' were organized as part of the celebration.

The programme began with dignitaries and the students offering floral tributes to the portrait of Swami Vivekananda.

Shyam Prasad S, head of mathematics department, was the chief guest on the occasion and delivered the special lecture on Swami Vivekananda. Sharing several anecdotes from Swami Vivekananda's life, he observed that Swami Vivekananda could pursue the path of enlightenment because he never believed anything blindly and had the courage and conviction to question the dogmas prevalent in the society. He urged the students to take a leaf out of Swami Vivekananda's life and emulate the values and ideals embedded in his teachings.

Dr N K Vijayan, principal presided over the programme and offered his greetings on Vivekananda Jayanti, which is also celebrated as National Youth Day. Citing quotes from Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata and Ben Jonson's ‘The Noble Nature’ poem, he remarked that Swami Vivekananda, despite the short span of his life restored the dignity of India which was being sneered at by the west. He recalled Swami Vivekananda's famous quote, 'Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man and advised the students to detach themselves from unwanted things. Sharing his association with Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education, Dr Vijayan declared that Swami Vivekananda's universal humanism, eclectic outlook and unflinching faith in Indian spiritual tradition cannot be the monopoly of any particular faith but is the common asset of the entire nation.

Srinivasa, head of Sanskrit department and student welfare officer welcomed the audience while Sanjana I PU student proposed the vote of thanks. Srikrishna S, Kannada lecturer compered the programme. Chandralekha I PU student rendered the prayer song.

Darshan D V of II PUC (E) batch, Saikiran Godi of I PUC (C) batch and Sheethal S K of II PUC (J) batch bagged the first, second and third prizes in the essay contest.

Mohana Kannada lecturer and student welfare officer; Jasmine Prathibha, English lecturer; Rakshith, maths lecturer; Kakali Chakraborthy, English lecturer and Krishna Prasad, English lecturer graced the occasion.
