Udupi, Jan 21: "More people die in road accidents in the country than by deadly diseases. Two wheeler riders in particular are dying in large numbers among them. It is the responsibility of everybody to create awareness among two-wheeler riders about mandatory wearing of helmets," said Kaup police circle inspector Sunil Y Naik.

He was speaking at a road safety awareness rally and information programme on wearing of helmets held under the aegis of Kaup police station, Jaycerettes Kaup, Youth JCI division and Kaup Vidyaniketan group of education institutes on Wednesday, January 20. He also set in motion the rally held later on the occasion.

"Among those who die in accidents, 23% are two wheeler riders, 22% are pedestrians, 5% cyclists, 31% die in car accidents and 19% are victims of other accidents. It is tragic that 59% of those who die are between 15 to 44 years of age. In this respect, it is essential to explain the youth about road safety," he said.

Kaup JCI president Soumya Rakesh presided over the programme. Kaup Vidyanikethan Group of Institute's administrative official Professor V K Udyavar and JCI east zone official Harish Kumar Hejmady were the guests of honour.

District physical education officer Madhukar S, Kaup police station ASI Jayasheela, Kaup JCI secretary Vinod Kanchan, Youth JCI president Neeraj Kumar and Kaup Rotary president Praveen Gurme were present.

Journalist, JCI zonal vice president Rakesh Kunjoor compered the programme. Kaup police station staff Sandeep Kumar proposed vote of thanks.

The walk and bike rally was held from Kaup Laxmi Janardana temple to Kaup police station. A pamphlet regarding road safety and wearing of helmet was distributed. Male and female students of Kaup Vidyaniketan Group of Institutes, rangers and rovers members of Kaup first Grade College participated in the rally.
