Mangaluru, Jan 22: Thieves made good their escape after managing to steal about 1,200 kg areca nut from the godown of Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Bykmapady here on the night of Wednesday January 20.

The thieves entered the godown of APMC, owned by Mukund and located a km away from the main entrance to APMC, by breaking open the rolling shutter on the rear side. They took away 18 gunny bags full of areca nut. Without touching the front shutter, they transported areca nut from the rear entrance.

The police suspect that the stolen areca nut was transported through Angaragundi, which is located adjacent to the rear entrance to the godown. The thieves also have taken away the computer attached to the closed circuit television camera at the godown.

APMC, spread over 85 acres of land, has witnessed thefts earlier too as there is no proper security arrangement and the area is deserted during the night. No security staff have been deployed even after these thefts.

Sniffer dogs and finger print experts were summoned to the spot of crime. Panambur police also visited the spot and gathered information. On the basis of complaint filed by owner of the godown, Mukund, a case was registered in Panambur police station.
