Beltangady, Feb 15: In a shocking incident, a man, said to be a troublemaker, was beaten to death by a mob for allegedly stealing arecanuts from a house here on Monday February 15. The incident took place at Totatthady here.
It is learnt that the locals caught hold of Peter (38), tied him to a tree and thrashed him, alleging that he had stolen a bag of arecanuts from a house.
Peter who was seriously injured passed away in a hospital later.
Sources said that a month back, Peter was jailed on charges of theft, and was released on bail just a week ago.
There was also complaint filed against him that he had added endosulfan into the water tank of a family last month.
On Monday evening, he was reportedly seen carrying a bag of arecanuts that he allegedly stole from a house. The locals caught hold of him and informed the police, but before the police could arrive, they tied him to a tree and thrashed him.
Sources also said that before he died in the hospital, he revealed the names of two persons among those who assaulted him.
Beltangady police have registered a case.
