More than 58 commercial buildings in Udupi city have shop owners and customers parking their vehicles on the road, disrupting smooth traffic movement. It was noted that several buildings were constructed without adhering to parking regulations despite obtaining municipal approval. The DC instructed officials to issue notices to building owners and ensure adequate parking facilities within the premises.
She also pointed out that unauthorized warehouses and street vendors selling fruits, vegetables, and fast food near the city’s service bus stand and Board High School area are obstructing vehicle movement. Municipality and police department officials were directed to take action to remove these obstructions.
Additionally, the police department has recommended the suspension of driving licenses for 82 individuals involved in fatal road accidents. So far, 59 licenses have already been revoked, and the remaining 23 will be canceled within a week.
Regarding national highways in the district, temporary safety measures have been implemented in identified accident-prone areas, and permanent safety improvements will be completed soon. The DC emphasized the need for scientifically designed warning boards, zebra crossings, and speed breakers near schools along the highways.
Under the Solatium Scheme, compensation was recommended for victims and dependent family members of 20 hit-and-run cases reported in 2023 and 2024. However, payments have yet to be processed for 13 cases. The DC instructed the General Insurance Company to approve these compensations immediately.
The meeting was attended by district superintendent of police Dr Arun K, executive engineer Kiran S, National Highways Authority project director Abdullah Mohammed Azmi, NHAI officer Aniruddh Kamath, district information officer Manjunath B, contractors, and other officials.
