Mangaluru: Jammer in jail jams happiness of people, becomes nightmare

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Feb 17: The mobile jammer installed inside the jail on jail road near M G road in city has become a nightmare for the people in the surrounding areas, it has been revealed.

A mobile jammer was installed recently at the jail premises with the intention of jamming the mobile phones inside the jail. This was done to curb the use of mobile phones by inmates of the jail who were allegedly using them to interact with the outside world. After the twin murder recently, the police had taken measures to install ‘law and order’ inside the jail. They also discovered that substances like ganja are smuggled into the jail for consumption by some of the inmates. Recently during a raid, some mobiles used by the inmates were seized by police.

The ‘wise’ police department chose an expensive plan to stop the inmates from using the mobile phones. It installed jammer and thought the problems would end. While jammers may have helped the jail, it has become nightmare for people in the surrounding areas. The mobile users in the vicinity do not get signals in their phones. If their numbers are called, one will get ‘Switched off’ answer.

The most affected are the occupants of commercial complexes nearby. They said their businesses have been completely affected.

When several people complained to the mobile service providers four days back, they came to know that it was due to the jammer installed inside the jail premises. The problem has continued since then. Though the issue has reached the jail authorities, they have not done anything, said some people from the area. They said that it may take days or weeks for the jail authorities even to take a decision to address the issue, forget about uninstalling the jammer.

Jail authorities, when contacted, said that the technicians are working in dealing with the problem. They said the height of the tower carrying jammer has been lowered and frequency has been reduced. It is yet to be seen when the mobile phones in the area will function without any ‘interference’ from police.

    Dear P. Shirish Kumar, Mangalore

It is highly appreciated that the Police have taken appropriate step. In the mean time there is a fall-out:
"Jammer in jail jams happiness of people, becomes nightmare. The most affected are the occupants of commercial complexes nearby. They said their businesses have been completely affected"
Hopefully they will find out a lasting solution ASAP.

Without informing the public about the 'jail jammer', the surrounding area people have 'suffered' enormously for the past one week. This is definitely a technical blunder on the part of 'jammer engineers' to put everybody in and around M.G.Road / Bejai area in "no communication mode", thus effecting all business houses, students and print/electronic media.

Before installing such devises (which is absolutely necessary in jails), please do your homework properly and then install.

This is the problem when we think of 'One solution for all problems'!!!. First of all it is the duty of the jail wardens to see that no phones are smuggled inside jail premises!. The fact that phones are inside points the fingers corrupt authorities. Secondly, punish the guilty severely whether its prisoners of jail authorities whenever a phone if found inside jail and all these smuggling will stop!. It looks there is not a single politicians house nearby, else the jammer would have been jammed immediately!

First try to find out how and who supplies mobiles/narcotics to inmates and keep tight vigil on the visitors.

"They said the height of the tower carrying jammer has been lowered and frequency has been reduced"

How jail authorities cope with non-availability of mobile service?

This suggestions I have given almost 3 years back to DC & also requested to implement within the premises of Educational institutions. And install landline pay phones.

But due to Political leaders influence this action delayed & happy to hear finally they installed.

This is not Mobile jammers, this is called Mobile Network Signal Jammers.

Finally, Mr.Flavian, don't worry, Jail Authorities have landline phones.

Please appreciate the good work for good reason. No worry or wasting time to find out who provides the Mobile phone to criminals.

It is a good Idea to Jam mobiles of Inmates

While jamming did they tested it prior to installing the device.

VIRTUALLY THE SURROUNDING PEOPLE CANNOT CALL ANYWHERE FROM ANY OF THE SERVICE PROVIDERS MOBILE SERVICES.

VERY, VERY BAD FOR SURROUNDING PEOPLE.

Why the district administration wanted to Jam mobiles. Do the Jailer /Jail Superintendent is incapable in his duty and supplies mobiles to Jail inmates via bribes.

I own a business in the area and most of clients do the bookings through mobile / text messages..etc. Sales have gone down by almost 50% for the past few days. As Amith rightly pointed out, if some politician stayed nearby the story would have been different. Hope our local representatives wake up in time and sort out the issue.

Its a waste of money. Mobile calls could be done standing very next to the Jail compound. But if you go away from the jail calls cannot be done.
Instead of installing the Jammer if the authorizes check the materials strictly. Everything would be solved. There is some thing fishy here. Some one is making money out of it. Even if they reduce the height near by places it will affect the services.
