Mangaluru: 28 years since losing eyesight - Melville Pinto protests police brutality

Mangaluru, Feb 18: Social activist Melville Pinto on Thursday, February 18 went on a lone protest demanding justice and submitted a petition to the government through deputy commissioner in city.

Melville in a press statement said that he was subjected to police brutality 28 years ago on the same day after which he lost his eyesight.






"A case stands registered at second JMFC court in Mangaluru city against police officer Kempaiah who was responsible for the same. I was taken by the officer with P B D'Sa of PUCL and we were subjected to police brutality. It was an attack on fundamental rights well as on human rights. Though the summons was issued against him, Subhash Chandra, Harishchandra, C Mohan and Suleiman, they did not appear in court for long. Recently they appeared and were released on bail. Lokayukta has also registered a case against Kempaiah and is investigating. But the people in power are protecting him and others which in turn has affected the society sending a signal that there is no law," the statement reads.

"I request the government to stop protecting the culprits and discourage people from doing such acts in the future," the petition concludes.

    Our police force needs frequent Counselling. Due to pressure from various sources they commit crime. Through Counselling one should make them understand that police force is for our protection not to dance on Politicians pressure.

    This man here has been fighting his battle for many years. His friends, family know how painstaking it has been to get justice. With the current system, Justice will never happen, come what may. He did not wake up now But his fight for justice came into the limelight only now. I hope that answers.. Learn to appreciate what this man is doing at his age.

    If the accused do not appear before the court after serving the summons, judge normally issue an arrest warrant. If the arrest warrant is not executed in reasonable time, judge has the power to impound accused person's property and him absconding.

    Justice delayed justice denied. 28 years delay means the system is in-efficient and someone in power should take corrective action against the lethargic system immediately.

    How come the judiciary did not issue notice to the Police Commissioner to produce them before the court?

    I fully understand the hardship Melville Pinto went through due to police brutality. But why did he take 28 years to protest even after losing his eyesight. There are many organizations who could have taken care of this vital issue. The pictures clicked by Daijiworld photographer Ramesh Pandith shows only Melville with a protest banner hung on his neck.

    There is a Human Rights Administration in Delhi. Contact them.Or write to International Human Rights Organization and they will bring up the issue Internationally.

    This is real brutal and unfortunate that the victim has been denied his right of justice for so long.The police department to look into this matter and do the needful without any delay.
