Udupi, Feb 21: A weekend outing to St Mary's Island, Malpe by a group of friends turned tragic after one of them drowned while swimming.
The deceased has been identified as Prasad Babu (19), son of Ravi Kumar of Andhra Pradesh.

It is learnt that on Sunday February 21, a group of eight students including Prasad, all from NIT-K, Suratkal, visited St Mary's Island.
While seven of them sat on some spot at the Island, Prasad climbed over the rocks and jumped into the water for a swim. He was quickly washed away by the strong currents.
The lifeguards at the Island rushed to his rescue, but he had already been swept away to a distance. The lifeguards found him but by the time he was taken to hospital, he was dead.
Prasad was a second year mechanical engineering student of NIT-K, Suratkal. He was the only son to his parents.
Sources said that his family in Andhra Pradesh have been informed and they would be coming to Udupi soon.
Malpe police have registered a case.
