I am not an atheist, but against superstition : Siddaramiah

Mysuru, Feb 23 (PTI): Declining to describe himself as an "atheist", Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said he has been "branded" as a non-believer due to his stand against superstitious practices.

"I am not an atheist, because, even before I joined school, I was made to practice Veera Makkala Kunita (a traditional folk dance), so I had to perform in front of temple on all festivities. How can I be atheist then?" Siddaramaiah asked.

"One thing that I have adapted in my life is to look at everything scientifically and thoughtfully," Siddaramaiah said in his address at the valedictory function of Kumbhmela at T Narasipura near here.

Claiming that he was not against beliefs, the Chief Minister said, "I am against superstition and superstitious practices."

"So, whenever I spoke against certain things, some people have branded me as an atheist, and said I was against religion and beliefs."

Reiterating that he was not an atheist, Siddaramaiah said he visits temples and believes that there is one god.

"I go to Tirupati, also to Mahadeshwara Betta (Shrine of Mahadeshwara Swamy in Chamarajanagara district), but I don't go in search of specific temples for salvation," he said.

"I believe that god is everywhere and he is one, but I don't believe that one can attain salvation by visiting god in remote areas of Himalayas," he added.

Earlier too Siddaramaiah had clarified on the issue while reacting to a legislator's comment in the Assembly last year.

"I never said I was an atheist. This doesn't mean I visit temples every day with camphor and coconut in hand," he had said.

Superstitions are man’s own creations. They didn’t come from God. As far as I know no religious Scripture preaches superstition. For instance the Bible warns against approaching sorcerers, fortunetellers, practicing witchcraft and communicating with the dead.

Even if God does not exist we have to lead a GOOD life. Our lives on earth will be good only if we do GOOD. Absence of GOOD destroys everything. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

The line between belief and superstition is very elastic. It can be pulled on each side as per convenience.
Rationally thinking the belief of God's existence itself is a superstition. But if you believe in God, you lose the right to point out what is superstition. Let me list out some things... Sidarama should now respect all these things as he said he does believe in God.
    God exists
praying to sun, moon , earth, air , water etc ( i did not use worship coz then i will be an environmentalist!)
    breaking coconuts in temple
    burning camphor
Homa, Havan and yagnas where much is burnt in the fire
    ringing bells on entering temple
    taking pilgrimage
    Oh! let me include..
    ringing bells in churches
    fasting during lent
    belief in virgin birth
    Loud adhaans
    sacrificing innocent lambs etc etc

Although Born a Hindu i am an agnostic from a very young age. as per my view, as long as ones belief does not adversely affect any other person mentally or physically state should not intervene. If it does, state has to intervene. However, the culture & tradition which forms part of any religion should adapt with change in time. Since Hinduism is a way of life and is guidance based religion and not a rule based religion, it can adopt to change in times. That is the reason i do not want other religion to demographically alter Hindu religion using some illogical reasoning.

Christians are forbidden to follow any superstitious belief, because it become idolatry and goes against the First Commandment. As for fasting or ringing bells, it does not increase or decrease God's Glory as He is God and nothing that we do can affect Him in the least. The only benefit we get by fasting is to draw closer to Him since we now are no longer governed by flesh.

Encouraging the scientific ideology is also a constitutional requirement but almost politicians never desired even to practice atleast in their govt office .How can the secular indias govt offices or educational institutions practice the blind believes while on duty hours just because majoritarean workforce belongs to particular community. In this case hatts off to siddaramayya to take daring step towards abolishing meaningless superstitious practices by keeping example himself .
