Kannur airport in final stages of work, may become functional by year end

Daijiworld Media Network - Kasargod (SP)

Kasargod, Feb 23: As per information gathered, works on the fourth international airport of Kerala at Kannur are in final stages, and that the airport is likely to begin functioning from December this year.

Towards this end, the first trial flight will be undertaken on February 29. Arrangements are being made to make some flights operational by September.

Out of 2,700 metres of runway here, 2,400 metres of runway is ready. Plans are afoot to use Code B aircraft for the trial flight. Although in normal course, building of an airport takes between five and six years, Kannur airport is getting ready within a period of two years. The total project cost of the airport is Rs 1,892 crore, and it is planned to begin cargo services here simultaneously. Although the trial flights were proposed during December last, the plan was postponed because of heavy rains which appeared in the region in October and November.

The airport, which is coming up at Mattannur near Kannur will be the fourth international airport of Kerala after Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

At present, many people working abroad and residing in north Kerala prefer to use Mangaluru airport for travelling to their countries of work. Out of Kerala's non-resident Indians working in the gulf, 15 percent belong to this area, and most of them use Mangaluru airport for travel. For them, Kannur airport will be close by as compared to Mangaluru. People from Kanhangad, Nileshwara and Trikkaripura are likely to make use of Kannur airport because of distance factor.

At present, about 13 lac passengers use Mangaluru airport for their air travel. As per an estimate, nearly five lac among them are from Kerala. The opening of Kannur airport therefore, is likely to result in a steep fall in the number of passengers using Mangaluru airport, analysts say.

    Best wishes Kannur Airport!!!

Every time criticising namma Mangaluru Airport is not so good. After all it is our land.To me there were some staffs rude but there are some good staffs with generously smiling face, some even treat all community same.I had one great opportunity to meet that lady staff who was speaking in kannada scanned me.But never made me feel like a criminal. She made me feel hassle free.So helpful. Her words were so polite.May be its some officers who are highly influenced by local goons etc are harsh. But otherwise there are good people .

Bad & Good news for Mangalore.
Now Kannur will be more "Gold Rich" than Mangalore.
Now excise officials in Mangalore have the fear of losing their jobs as there wont be any work for them in the future.

It is good news. Now Mangalore airport will be hassle-free of smuggling activities. Most of the smuggled goods from gulf countries used to go through Mangalore airport and then to Kasargod.

Good. Mangaloreans will benefit. a) Cusoms officers will not harass us any more because most of the Gold smuggling is done by Kasaragod passengers. (it may not sound well, but it is truth). b) June-August and Dec-Jan Air India Express price hike will be no more as we got another option of travelling through Kannur Airport. c) We can now insist Airport/Air India crew to use Kannada and Tulu language for announcements. Let us think positive.

Well done. This airport project should serve as a lesson for civil engineering students. I think, the runway length shown in this report is incorrect. According to Wikipedia.org, the runway length is 3050 meters or 10006 feet which is needed for a true international airport and for larger aircraft such as 747 or 777 to land.

Problem for Mangalore bound passengers from GCC countries. Once Kannur Airport is operational Mangalore bound flights could be half empty and chances for cancellation of regular flights or flight frequencies. We have to wait and see further (unforeseen) developments in this regard.

I hope nothing loss for Mangalorieans because still some of GCC countires not experianced STANDALONE flights from Mangalore. If private airlines get permission to operate direct flight on daily basis from GCC, sure it will be an more helpful. Mangalore Airport din't build by depending on Kerala Passangers. Making step a side these Airindia Express flights & giving room for private airlines will develope more our Mangalore Airport.

travellong to managluru is a hassle bcz of rude customs official, I am travelling to managalore from last 15 years but from last two years the behaviour of customs disappointed, they are able to catch lot of gold by smuggles but mean time they are harassing people even for the daily use ornaments. I am coimg to hometown every quarterly and every time they will harass my wife for her daily use ornaments and according to them we shall not bring the gold at all if we have not completed at least one year, but who has record that we have not been allowed from last 2 years to bring just two bangles even though we have completed two years. Its good that Kannur airport is coming and kasargod smuggle will move and we can travel without hassle.

We are always getting PROMISESS of extension of Runway. Every new director of Mangalore Airport call one press meet for giving fake hopes. On other hand, technically its tough to extend runway due to tabel top airport structur. Also its hard to transfer this aiport from one place to another because its not an small budget infrastructure. So better happy on what we have now..

    'Nette Smuggling Onthe Kami Aavu'!
Odode Otted Bangara Kanapuna..Aitha Checking Maatha Nanah Kannurudu!
    Translation:
    Smuggling activities mainly in gold
    will gradually decrease.
'IN Hole' smuggling of gold (in various holes that is) will from now on start at Kannur...
I think at the 'Inauguration of the Airport' Woomen Chandy will allow a
few smugglers 'Free Entry',passage or whatever to mark the occasion...!
Kannur Airport in any case would need 'Expert Hole Checkers' in future.!
I think customs officers here will have to write special papers to qualify for the job!
