Kundapur, Feb 24: Police on Tuesday discovered more details on ornaments kept in the lockers of the famous Kollur Sri Mookambika temple. Some hitherto unknown facts have been disclosed after the police took arrested Shivaram Madiwala to the temple and opened the lockers with the keys he had.

Police had arrested Shivaram Madiwala on Monday, February 22.

It has been now revealed that Shivaram Madiwala had pledged ornaments worth more than Rs 30 lac in various financial institutions and cooperative banks to avail loan.

In addition to the confession by Madiwala, police also obtained details from the places where ornaments were pledged.

Temple executive manager T R Uma, assistant manager Krishnamurthy, priests Dr K N Narasimha Adiga, Manjunatha Adiga, Ramakrishna Adiga, sub inspector Shekara and former executive manager L S Maruti went to the temple and opened the lockers in the presence of the temple staff.

From July 2012, 48 different types of ornaments were kept in the locker out of which only 11 are remaining. Other ornaments were pledged with the financial institutions and cooperative banks. Madiwala kept on taking out the ornaments from lockers to pay the interest on the loans availed.

Interestingly, Madiwala has taken only golden ornaments and has not touched silver ornaments. Some ornaments donated by prominent people remain untouched.

Police also took possession of the gold which was kept hidden in unauthorised place within the temple premises.

Madiwala who got slight opportunity to talk to media said “There are many people involved in the scam. I thought they would protect me in case I am caught. But theft from temple is wrong. There is no forgiveness for that. But I reveal the names of people, who wanted me to steal, at appropriate time.”

The temple had collected 450.400 grams of gold from June 22 to December 31 in 2012, 1334.800 grams of gold from January 25 to December 15 in 2013, and 670.440 grams from January 5 to December 19 in 2014. In Jan 2015, it collected 98 grams of gold. From May 14 to October 15 in 2015, it collected 192.550 grams of gold.

After T R Uma joined as manager, from November 10 in 2015 to February 10 in 2016, 323.200 grams of gold was collected. From 2012 to 2016, 48 numbers of ornaments of 3069.390 grams were received by the temple as donation.

Kollur Sri Mookambika temple ranks second in the state in terms of income. Department of religious endowment and district administration have failed completely who were supposed to monitor the activities in the temple. It is not yet known why an ordinary worker like Madiwala was given so much of responsibility and authority.

    Dear viewers,

This is definitely not one man show. Full management is involved in it. Why not name all of them who is involved & check the bank assets of all the management staff in this holy temple. And henceforth please stop donating to temple. Temple has become a advertising firm for all big business people. The business tycoons will not donate to any institutions which helps the poor. Temples have become one of the prime business in the market now. Government should henceforth stop giving permission for building of any more temple, mosques & church in India. India is a developing country & we can see it developing only from one side. Kindly stop donating to temple & help build the nation to help the poor & donate to institution who takes care of poor people for education & good food & living. I would like Mr. Shivaram to name all the guys involved in this case.

    Thanks

It is shame that our temples are hoarding such a huge amount of wealth in the locker. This money if not used for public charity or betterment of community what is the use of it ? Can't Hindu temple build schools and colleges and at least educate the Hindu poor people for free ? We have never learnt lesson from the past . Our old temples were destroyed by the invaders due to its gold and precious stones and if we don't learn the lesson the history will return. More we mismanage the temple more of our people will lose faith on our religion .

"It has been now revealed that Shivaram Madiwala had pledged ornaments worth more than Rs 30 lac in various financial institutions and cooperative banks to avail loan"
There could be well knitted association/understanding between Shivaram and the Financial Inst. Heads or staff.
Isn’t there any regulatory obligation on the part of such institutions to scrutinize persons worth or other information as to the financial status?
Strange isn't it? Corruption is deep-rooted everywhere.

Most of the religious places fools their devotees. I was watching some Kannada channel and that temple takes cows, goats as donations. The temple asked the Government to donate land for Goshala. They have taken free land from Government and taking animals but they are supplying these animals to butchers of Kerala and Tamilnadu. Peoples sacrifice and temples ??????

How times have changed! In days gone by,irrespective of caste, community etc people used to join places of worship only with an intention to serve, not even to earn income. In fact working as an accounts keeper, custodian of gold etc was considered some sort of a curse because of the responsibility it carried then. People were afraid even if wrongs were committed unintentionally.
    Now this!
    You join temple to rob!
You become a Trustee to rob!
You become an administrator to use influence and award contracts!!
    What a time!
It's because of a very 'Devoted Few'the sanctity has remained.
Otherwise...god only knows what would have happened!!
Only the Goddess knows why all this is happening on this earth!

Alright - he pledged ornaments and applied for loan. What did he do with the money ? Purchased property ? Vehicles ? What ? On whose names the purchases are made ? Investigating this will give out some clues about how many people are involved in this scam.

Aren't those property/assets to be confiscated according to the rules ?

First of all - Sashtanga Pranam in the feet of Kollur Mookambike.
Here Once again express the truth - we need to change the mind set of people - GOD is not Gold or Gold is not GOD. We must stop worshiping GOD with Gold. Everyone has to accepts all time truth GOD does not need these, he only accepts pure Bhakti. Now a days All back money, unwanted elements comes in to temples in the name of these type ornaments and spoil the PAVITHRATE of the temple. It is better use wealth for the development of our country - basic infrastructure - water, road, housing, electricity, clothing etc- which will bring down the our the poverty level. The Greed for wealth leads to all such activities. Let us take a setup towards " Sarve Janah Sukhino Bhavantu". Our religious leaders, Swamijis guide the society in this direction.

    So what VM, Udupi..???

If stealing is a sin and that too from a holy shrine, then hoarding the valuables and depriving the poor and needy of their basic necessities is a much worse sin.
I am a Christian. But yet I would ask you…do you honestly think that Goddess Mookambika has asked her devotees to decorate her body with Gold shrangara?? No! On the contrary she would call upon her devotees to help satisfy the needs of the poor, the lowly and the deprived sections of the society and that would surely please her.

In this context, I agree with what Mr Ashok Bhat says in his comment above. God asks only for Bhakthi, but always with a Swacha & Sachha Dil. The Lord is a kind God and not a selfish God, my dear readers.
