Bengaluru: CM reveals who gifted him luxury watch, to declare it as state asset

Bengaluru, Feb 25 (PTI): Under attack from the Opposition over his luxurious watch, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddarmaiah today said he would declare it as a state asset and hand it over to the government.

"About the expensive watch I was wearing, which has been discussed almost everyday and reported in the media, I have this much to say that I will be declaring it as the state asset and deposit it with state secretariat," he told reporters here.

The controversy was fuelled by former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who had claimed the diamond-studded Hublot watch was worth Rs 70 lakh and had been gifted to Siddaramaiah and that he had proof for his claims.

Siddaramaiah revealed that the expensive watch was gifted to him by his close friend (NRI) Gopal Pillai Girish Chandra Verma who visited India last July.

"The full name of the person who gifted this invaluable watch is Gopal Pillai Girish Chandra Verma. He had come to India in July last year. I know him since 1983 and whenever he visits India, he meets me," the Chief Minister said.

Gopal Pillai Girish Chandra Verma

Siddaramaiah further clarified, "Verma gifted me the watch, even though I was not keen on accepting it. However, he insisted that I accept it and I accepted because of our long friendship but I did not know how expensive it was."

The CM said he would furnish relevant documents of the watch to the Lokayukta and Income Tax.

The Chief Minister's decision to declare the watch as a state asset comes in the backdrop of criticism from various quarters.

State BJP President and MP Prahalad Joshi had sought a probe by the Enforcement Directorate to find out the owner of the watch and whether customs duty had been paid for it.

A complaint had been filed by city-based activist S Bhaskaran with the state Lokayukta seeking Siddaramaiah's prosecution under the Prevention of Corruption Act for accepting the expensive gift and not declaring it before appropriate authorities.

Reacting to Siddaramaiah's announcement, Congress MLC V S Ugrappa, who had yesterday suggested three options including declaring the watch as a state asset, welcomed it.

Seeking to turn the tables, he asked Kumaraswamy to declare his "luxurious" assets, including cars and watches, as state asset.

Replying to a query, Ugrappa said the Chief Minister was busy with recent by-election, and Taluk and Zilla Panchayat polls and hence could not find time to come out with facts about the controversy earlier.

Kumaraswamy had argued that the Chief Minister should have come out openly the very next day the watch controversy came out in public.

He has two names 'Gopal Pillai' and 'Girish Chandra Verma'. I don't think such an expensive gift will be given unless he has something to get in return which is much more the value of watch. A gift for gain is considered as bribe.

CM Siddu is playing pure politics, he has approached lot of Industrialist & business men & they have gifted him in some favor in their behalf, wait for many events to turn and twist, if Siddu was so sure, he should have come clean immediately, as soon as Ex CM Kumaraswamy made an allegation about his wrist watch. Why wait for nearly 2 months.

Name it self is confusing, Gopal Pillai Girish Chandra Verma, It is very clear, Siddu has taken legal advice before disclosing about his wrist watch, We saw him on youtube press conference live that he was corrected by an expert adviser, about its not voting percentage, but number of seats won (he was confused between the two, as voting percentage was not yet announced then) either way Siddu is in trouble and its going to haunt him rest of his term.

Wake up CM, show all your documents and fight your own case, you are a law graduate, practiced in Mysuru, why you need legal expert? Use your own brains & skills.

Hope all politicians regardless of the parties, be more accountable, than fooling people, people have become smart, they know the reality.

Congress for good interest of the party get rid of this immigrant from JD (S), if not you will regret later.

    Congress sympathizer.

Let's honestly analyze, question and expose all Indian leaders and their relatives properties,
Let them also follow CM's example and donate their valuable assets to the Govt. Condition of our Govt's will improve overnight.

    Sheejaji,

This should have done prior making big propaganda. Now, even if it is fake or genuine what is the great deal. Finally all effort made by many resulted in fiasco.

I am not a fan of any political party. Our elected Politicians are busy in others affairs, rather than concentrating on the development of nation and giving good to the general public, especially those who voted them. One need to compare the ratio of development against corruption.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch .. All politicians and bribe takers accept money // gifts, and dole out favours at Governments or tax payers cost. They are beggars and therefore cannot give from their own coffers. Ex PM calling himself a humble farmer and his kith and kin have also amassed wealth for generations, also BJPs Yeddiyurappa. KARNATAKA is a corrupt state and all are in politics to make money.
