Bengaluru: Centre's study team applauds Karnataka's initiative on drought

Bengaluru, Feb 26: Karnataka’s initiative to fill-up the tanks in Vijayapura district, utilizing its share of water in the Krishna river water, in Vijayapura district, has been warmly appreciated by the Central study team on drought headed by Union secretary for Energy department K K Mishra.

The three-member Central study team on drought, had visited the Centuries-old Begum Talab tank, built during Adil Shahi dynasty time, over 700 years back, where the canal and other related works of the tank-filling works being executed by the state-owned Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigama Limited (KBJNL) and evinced keen interest over the project.

The tank filling project works, which had been approved by the State Government to be implemented on Turn-key basis, have seen the completion of all the major components of the project and water is being let out in the pipeline network on trial basis.

The tank filling work, which has proved to be a successful one, envisaged not only to quench the drinking water need of the people of the district, but also aimed to recharge the depleted ground water situation in the region.

The Central drought study team, which had visited various places of the drought hit areas in the region, has shown keen interest on the project, which is seen as a major initiative to combat the scarcity conditions in the region.

The Central team leader K K Mishra, who is also secretary of the Union energy department, had sought the details on the tank filling project from the Ramandeep, Deputy Commissioner of the district and other experts, who were involved in the tank-filling project, which is being implemented by the department of Water Resources.
