Mangaluru: Awareness programme stresses on importance of intellectual property rights

Mangaluru, Feb 26: "Awareness on intellectual property rights in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) is the need of the hour. There are very few proposals coming for patents and copyrights. This has resulted in duplication thereby leading to violation," said Gokuldas Nayak, joint director, District Industries Centre, Dakshina Kannada, inaugurating one-day awareness programme on 'Intellectual Property Rights' organised by the Mangaluru branch of MSME Development Institute.

Addressing a gathering at hotel Deepa Comforts here on Friday February 26, Nayak said, "The main motto of this programme is to create awareness that the owner should get the benefit of his property (technology, design or brand name). The Government of India is coming up with new initiatives like Make in India, Digital Inidia and Skill India to encourage young entrepreneurs, and in this context it is very important that awareness is created to avoid duplication or violation. Only when intellectual property right (IPR) is filed will dupication be considered as violation. So I wish after this awareness programme more number of MSMEs file their patents."

H V Anandamurthy, deputy director MSME-DI, Bengaluru said, "I have a special bond towards Mangaluru since I pursued my postgraduation from MIT, Manipal. The problem with MSMEs is that they are satisfied with trademark registration. There is need to go further and register your ideas. For a small or medium enterprise registering one patent is also an achievement. We have 3 patent cells in Karnataka run by the government where assistance on patent registration can be availed free of cost. So I urge the enterprises to reap the benefit from these facilities."

S N Rangaprasad, director, MSME Development Institute, Bengaluru in his presidential address said, "There are three intellectual property rights cells in Karnataka where the enterprises can get assistance on filing patents. The enterprises need not spend money for the assistance. This is to promote MSMEs and encourage them to file patents. Karnataka government has also formed policies to facilitate the micro, small and medium enterprises. There will be a cost for the whole process of filling patents and half the cost is borne by the Karnataka government through Karnataka Council for Technological Upgradation. The assistance is only given to micro, small and medium enterprises and not to the large enterprises as they have their own attorneys and large enterprises like Infosys, MRPL and others file more than 100 patents each year. I wish all success to this awareness programme."

    This is an important topic and issue and should be adhered by all who are concerned. It should not be just on paper but should be implemented at the right time. We hear of many slogans but very few of them have been worked by the individuals concerned.

    Preserving the Intellectual Property Rights, specially in a country such as India is of paramount importance. People with different languages and talents to their credit are eager to grab other's creative ideas and use them for their own good as "Kopy Cats".

    Formulas and ideas on any concept that is unique and self created should be patented and patenting rights and privileges should be well publicized so that any misuse of Intellectual Property Rights are promptly detected and legal action to be taken.

    The Western countries are always of the opinion that countries such as India and China are very eager to imitate creative ideas. The Western countries have therefore realized the importance of bilateral agreements whereby Intellectual Property Rights are fully protected. Violation of any Intellectual Property Rights are heavily punished and the violators are permanently barred from any business involvements.

    Whether it is the creation of products or any other technological innovations should be patented in a timely manner and the Government should maintain a strict vigilance on any wrong doings at any time within or outside the country.

    Surveillance of patenting and adherence of all the regulations therefore should be effectively enforced so tht individual creative ideas are fully respected at all levels and in all disciplines.
