Udupi: Ambalpady residents hold huge protest over highway work, demand underpass

Udupi, Feb 26: Hundreds of Ambalpady residents on Friday February 26 blocked national highway 66 in protest against problems created by widening work on the highway and demanded an underpass at Ambalpady junction.

Bhaskar Shetty, one of the protestors said, "As per the plan prepared by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), it was decided to construct either an underpass or overbridge here, but the plan has been changed now. There is no underpass or overbridge at Ambalpady junction. The authority is evasive about making the master plan public and the villagers are not getting any information even through RTI.

"The NH authority did not take opinions from locals before chalking out the plan," he added.

"The Temple Town of Udupi is known for tourist places and educational institutions. Moreover, Ambalpady junction connects the government district hospital, government and private colleges, Ambalpady temple, SP office and so on. The highway work has made it difficult for people from Ambalpady, Kadekar, Bannanje and other places to travel to the heart of the city," he pointed out.

The villagers demanded that NHAI officials come to the spot and accept their memorandum personally. The protesters stopped vehicles on the highway for a while, thus causing traffic jam.

Uday Kumar Shetty alleged that the NHAI had completely neglected the interest of the locals. He also informed that on Saturday February 27, the residents of Ambalpady would meet MP Shobha Karadlaje and discuss the issue in detail.

"We are also ready to meet union minister for road transport Nitin Gadkari. The central government has enough funds for highway development, but the NHAI claims it has no funds," he added.

Finally, the NHAI officials came to the spot and received a memorandum from the protestors, after which the agitation was withdraw.

Pradeep Chandra Kutpady, Dinkar, Vasanti Shetty Ambalpady, Shantaraj Aithal, Vishu Shetty Ambalpady, Bhaskar Rao Kediyoor and locals participated in the protest.

    Under passes are required on the national highway.Otherwise the people staying around will really find difficult to move out and the life will become a curse in view of national highway.

    This problem should be solved at the earliest as this highway work is causing a otf of hardship to Ambalpady residents as well as to others. If a underpass or overhead bridge is made, it will solve the problem to some extent. Otherwise, this protest will continue.

    This what exactly happened in Ambalpady. Last one year few people for their interest met as highway hitarakshna samithy. they are the one who changed the highway original perfect plan , got sanctioned a wrong plan for their benefit. Now Ambalpady citizens realized the faul game & demanding for the original plan. A junction like ambalpady has to to be 60 meters wide. They had stored all the material to build over bridge. few days back they vacated it. for the benifit of Ambalpady /kidiyoor /kadekar/malpe citizens. 60 Meters wide highway is must.

    Underpass bridge is not safe due to heavy rain in that region and it might delay further NH work too. The best solution is over bridge with freeway to NH on both side. Blaming political parties and taking advantage in this issue by political parties is stupid thing. The problem need to be solved asap.

    Ambalpaddy junction must have underpass or over bridge facility to connect the local residents as well local business concern. The NH authority should have been disused the plan before implementing. building over bridge is not at all a big task , it is simple , let them go and see some of the worlds best highways and underpass/ over bridges, so that they can learn ! it is our national investment , so when you invest money think and invest with good intention for the next 100 years for the people of india !     Actually these residents are right. An underpass is required urgently in order to prevent another Nanthoor type junction in Udupi.

    I could see most of the leaders in the protesting group belong to the party ruling at Centre. I urge them to raise this issue at the highest level in the party and get the solution. NHAI is controlled by Central Road ministry is suppose.

    I am not seeing it as a problem rather looking it as a solution to the issue. If the protestors have a reach till the ruling government at a political level, please use it for peoples sake. It will give quick resolution of the issue. there is no prejudice here but looking at solution to the issue. thanks
