Mangaluru, Feb 29: A meeting chaired by deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim was convened at DC's office here on Monday February 29 to discuss the proposed construction of a new building and renovation and restoration of the existing buildings of Wenlock district hospital by Kasturba Medical College (KMC).

Associate dean of KMC hospital, Dr Anand R gave a brief presentation on the proposed plan for Wenlock hospital and said, "The main emphasis will be on good operation theater, improving the wards and renovation and restoration of the old buildings. It would be taken up in 3 phases, that is construction of the building, renovation and restoration of existing buildings and consolidation of wards. The new building would be constructed at the spot where laundry and mortuary are currently located. The building would have basement, and ground plus 3 floors spread over a total area of 85,000 square feet, with each floor measuring 18,000 sq ft. The new building would have 10 operation theatres, 10-bedded pre-operative ward and 5-bedded surgical ICU.

"The basement will be completely used for parking and will accommodate about 80 to 90 cars. The ground floor will comprise 20 emergency beds, emergency operation theatre, 30-bedded orthopedic ward and 5-bedded ICU. The first floor will be exclusively for operation theatres. Second and third floors will be developed as wards for inpatients. It would take two years to complete this new building.

"In the second phase, renovation and restoration will be taken up, including repair of flooring, roof and changing of plumbing and electrical lines, and this would take another 3 years. We cannot take up both construction of new building and renovation work simultaneously, hence they will be undertaken in two phases. The entire project cost will be borne by KMC hospital," he added.

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim asked Dr Anand to come up with more clarity on two points in this next meeting - on who will bear the expenses of the equipment and furniture that would be required to set up the new building, and secondly, who will supply the manpower required to run this new block. The next meeting will be held in a week's time.

District surgeon and medical superintendent Dr H R Rajeshwari Devi gave a presentation on the number of staff, income and expenditure of the hospital and the problems faced. "The hospital was sanctioned 31 senior specialists back in 1956, but no revision has been made since then. The hospital has grown in terms of patient inflow over the years and there are patients coming in from other districts too.

"KMC is contributing 98 senior specialists, 50 junior staff nurse 121 group D employees and 35 security personnel. Other than this, KMC also manages a lab and mortuary where services are given free of cost, thus making Wenlock the only district hospital in the state to give these services for free. About 17 nursing, 2 physiotherapy and 1 paramedical colleges use the clinical services at Wenlock hospital and they do not intern here. In the previous year, the hospital got Rs 17 crore from the budget, while the expenditure amounted to Rs 21 crore. The balance Rs 4 crore has been met from the Arogya Raksha Samiti fund collected through admission cards and clinical fees," she said.

It is a mind blowing proposal by KMC to construct a new building for Wenlock and also to renovate the existing hospital. The renovation and reconstruction was long overdue as the present layout is old and needs overall changes which will suit to the modern times.

Like DC Office shifting to Padil, Wenlock Hospital be shifted to less hustle bustle place may be outskirts of the City as the present one is situated in a noisy and polluted place. Let the renovation work be carried out to the present building. But the District Administration required about shifting the Hospital elsewhere.

The Lacklustur expression of the participants in the photo is obvious as if they are forced by someone to be there !!!

Shifting Wenlock from its present location is a good idea to a spacious location away from the city center.

There was a saying that Wenlock was built convenient for patients coming from U.S.A ( Ullala Sankada Ache )being built close to the Southern railway station which was very true as majority of the patients utilising its facilities were all from the neighbouring state.

But we the medical students were thankful to them as they were offering themselves to us to be examined and treated free of cost.

so the generations of medicos studied and became doctors by the help of these patients.

My suggestion is they should convert the whole complex into a commercial complex being at the heart of the city, generating revenue to run a free district general hospital in another location outside the city center.

But at the same time a small but modern diagnostic and emergency treatment center and polyclinics having all specialties can be started at this location as a feeder to the main hospital located elsewhere.

    Max Rasqinha,

I fully agree with your suggestions to shift Wenlock hospital from the present location.
Pandeshawar area would be an ideal and convenient location for the said purpose provided there government land available.

This is one of the finest message of inspiration that we have read about Mangalore where the Kasturba Medical Center has come forward to assist in the construction of a new Building for Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore.

This is one way to assist Mangalore in preparation of the
"Smart City" where Health and Environment should take the top priority in addition to Technology, Cleanliness, Orderliness and much more. Smart City is an investment for a totally new infrastructure that will transform Mangalore into an ideal place to live and learn so that the new generation is prepared for all the new challenges. You need to send some of the experts to U.S.A. and witness their 'forward looking' attitude that renders focus on the progress and prosperity of the people. City of Dallas and Houston is divided into many smaller Cities with their own Mayors and their own separate Legislators with total sufficiency of their own. The Medical Centers of Houston and Dallas are two separate Cities, completely independent from each other.

We are not sure whether the new complex will be at the existing place in the Center of Hampankatte or any other new location outside the City limits.

The present location of Wenlock Hospital is in a wrong location where the traffic is already in a total mess. If KMC can place their hands on at least another 100 acres further towards the Railway Station would be an ideal thought.Cleanliness is Godliness

We think, entire Wenclock Hospital should be shifted from the present location towards Urwa or beyond where the Stadium is located. The Hospital in the central location of Hampankatte is a wrong and unhygenic location.

If the City can totally demolish the present location and create a beautiful Park that would be the best gift to uplift the face of Mangalore. Wenlock Hospital needs a complete new 'facelist' and whatever the KMC initiates for Mangalore will remain as a golden gift that will be gratefully remembered for centuries.

That's a very big contribution, may be kmc wants more patients for their students to conduct research.
Anyways its a good thing if poor people are getting better health care.
