Puttur, Mar 4: Dr Raveendranath Aithal, who resides at Kallare in the town and has been catching and rescuing snakes since the last three decades, has stopped providing his services. Dr Aithal, who obtained permission from forest department to catch and rescue snakes in 1987, established his 'Sheshavana Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Trust' in 2003. For his, he had obtained permission from Animal Welfare Board of the union government. He has been taking care of snakes, providing treatment to them and releasing them into the forests since long. He says that he has stopped his service as he is unable to stick to the conditions imposed by the forest department for continuing it.

Dr Aithal has been in this field since 27 years, and has been submitting monthly reports to forest department on the number of snakes caught and rescued etc. He has caught and released into forest about 60,000 snakes during this period, and also helped hatching of about 20,000 snake eggs. He has saved 298 king cobras and rescued over a thousand snakes from the jaws of certain death. He was bitten by venomous snakes four times during this period, and got himself treated with his own Ayurveda medicine. He has also been helping people bitten by snakes by providing his Ayurveda medicine.

As there are no snake experts in the area to rely on, the people from the region are contemplating of leading a delegation to the deputy commissioner of the district so solve this problem.

    Daijiworld,
Could you please elaborate on the conditions Forest department has put on Dr. Aithal?
One this for sure, people will no longer go to Dr. Aithal for rescuing snakes but will kill it. Wondering if Forest department wants that?
Has Dr. Aithal been charging fees for his service that Forest Dept is against (Read: Wants share in it)?

we should see the other side of Problems too.As I understand,he is a employee of forest dept.and later started doing snakes catching.Sure he has to do his prime work first, then snakes catching.Let him give importance to the important work,or give off forest work ,suppose he feels both are not possible sometimes.Either Snacks,or forest work.May be when he goes Snack catching ,must have spent more time on this and neglected forest work.we know village People are always friendly, want chatt with one who helps,he cant go away immediately.Someone had some eye on him and his work. But he should decide about what is important and not both.

The forest Department can be exceedingly stupid. They had one subjected to Romulus Whittaker setting up the King Cobra sanctuary near Shimoga. Fortunately for the King Cobra the forest Department stupidity was overcome.

Why worry, if Snakes are found better call the Officials who opposed him, for rehabilitation work. Anyway they obey laws & please insist them to do this job, be it day or late night.

Just wake them up & definitely call for this needy work.

People who purchase old or uninhabited houses, before occupancy, call snake charmers to catch any snakes that may be inside.
One man calls a charmer, charmer comes with usual items, after reaching home, man goes to prepare tea and tells charmer to sit in the living room.
After tea, the charmer starts his work singing the pungi. One snake comes out, he puts in the bag, another comes out, he puts in the bag, 3rd comes out, that too he puts in the bag. Still continues with his pungi.
When 4th snake comes out, he got frightened and thinks himself, from where this came, since he hid only 3 in the house.

Can someone explain the benefits of saving these 6000 venomous snakes.
There is no such law to explain why these snakes has to be saved.
It's only superstitious belief that snakes are God's and the PM himself said yesterday that he is against superstition.
A 5 meter long king cobra is billed at 1000 RMB in reputed chinese restaurants.
People should raise peacocks to kill these venomous creatures.

Bryan, Its true. Ask a farmer, at his place snakes disappeared but big big rodents destroy their crop. True that peacocks eat snakes but they don't eat rodents. Sadly, peacock is a protected specie, they have multiplied and are devouring everything that available on a farm.

Now you guess - who is better ? Snakes or peacocks ?

caught 60000 snakes?. If we count 1 snake bites one person, even that means he protected 60000 people. such a achiever and philanthropic.

sad to see that he has to give up that work due to departmental hurdles.

    Rakesh,

No snake comes after humans to bite them. If you spot a snake, you will notice that it goes by its way but only when provoked, it bites in self defence. Therefore, its wrong to count the snakes and assume the number of snake-bite incidents.

However, its true that snakes come in search of food such as rodents which are destroyed by us humans to protect our food grains. When rodents are not available, snakes target chicks.

Why blame the reptile when its we who are breaking their food chain ?

Now, the govt want to trouble him. may be they expect some commission on this also.... now a gentleman stopped doing his noble work and impacted sector is the public. A gift from the govt.

With this we are half solving the problem. If not around the house, they will roam outside compound or sides of the road where there is no cement.

We have encroached their place through deforestation, where else snakes will go? This is where people like Raveendranath can help to establish harmony between nature and humans. 60K snakes is tremendous achievement.
