Bengaluru: Hundreds of dead fish washed ashore in Ulsoor lake

Bengaluru, Mar 7 (PTI): Hundreds of dead fish were washed ashore today at Ulsoor lake, a popular boating site here, raising concerns about water pollution in the city.

Residents living in and around the lake were in for a shock as they found the fish heaped around, raising unbearable stink in the water body.

Several residents, who complained about the stink, said sewage from the drain flowing into the lake due to a breach in a bund had depleted oxygen levels causing the large fish kill and authorities concerned had done nothing despite complaints.

"We are not surprised...we have been warning authorities from the last two years..sewage water is getting mixed with the lake water due to a breach in a bund..," a resident said.

A tourism spot, Ulsoor lake had been choked with water hyacinth in recent years, with government launching clean-up efforts.

The incident comes even as there is a growing concern by environmentalists over polluted lakes, exemplified by the thick froth and flames from the Yamlur lake that caused ripples in the city last year.

The cause for the large fish kill was not known.

Dead fish in Ulsoor lake are raising concerns about water pollution in the city- Report.

The whole society is to be blamed for allowing the pollution to go on in ulsoor lake. In fact our shortsighted self interests have resulted in whole ground water of Bangalore getting heavily polluted. The rain water does not reach the water table as all the catchment areas( lakes) are filled up and buildings have come up. As children we learn in school about CAUSE and EFFECT. These are are the consequences. Why now wake up after there is stink? What did we expect?

Our Indian culture is supposed to give respect to the Dharthi( Mother nature). Yet what we do in practice is exactly opposite. We do not have time to have foresight yet we follow vastu. What good is vastu if mother nature is abused over the years? It is because of her we exist.

Here in Mangalore - MCC is asking people to make the city Kerosene free. Yet every corner of the street we see- Heavy smoke emnating from burning fallen tree leaves!! If we put all the smoke produced by this and compare it with kerosine - TREES in MANGALORE are the MAIN POLLUTERS !! Yet we do not find anything amiss with this !! ( science, medicine, community medicine and public health is only in text books- no one uses it in practice other than practice to make money). It is as if mangalore is trying to be smart to show that we are no less than Delhi in pollution.

Particulate matter from the smoke - can exacerbate asthma and also increase the chances of getting asthma and lung cancer ( add all other smokes, dusts etc together). Yes Mangalore is a educational city.

Next one will be Nethravathi and Gurupur Rivers. All these Car washes coming up and releasing Detergent Water to Creeks nearby. Cancer causing chemicals are released. Oil and Grease contains Benzene, lead,Zinc,Chromium and Arsenic which are harmful to Environment. Water solvable Detergent is more dangerous to Fish. So Bangaloreans find out the Car washes around and check if they are releasing Car Wash Water to this lake either directly or trough tributaries. Also check and punish them if they do not follow EPA(Environmental Protection Agency) Rules. Corruption inside BDA Rules may be followed and caused Fish Deaths.

I hope these dead fishes will not be sold in the market causing one more problem to those who eat it. It is a terrible sight to see the dead fishes washed ashore and some people putting them in a basket. Even the stink from the contaminated water must be unbearable for the residents living in that area. Whoever is responsible for this polution of this lake water should be taken to task.
