Mangaluru, Mar 13: Catholic Sabha, Mangaluru diocese organized its members' convention in the premises of St Lawrence Church, Bondel here on Sunday March 13.

Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, bishop of Mangaluru diocese along with other dignitaries formally inaugurated the convention by lighting the lamp.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, bishop of Mangaluru said, "God has been kind and blessed this organization for the past 37 years. When this organisation was started I had noticed two qualities, that is concern for the community and love towards the community. There is a need for more political representation for our community. We have MLA and MLC from our community and they work not only for our community but for all the people. We have to protect our community. We have to be selfless and work for its betterment."

Walter D'Souza, former president of Catholic Sabha, Mangaluru said, "The difference between Catholic Sabha and other organisations is, right at the beginning we had a vision about what we wanted to do and where we wanted to be, and we have reached our goal today. I feel really happy to see such a huge gathering here today. When we started there were only about 15 to 20 people.

"Today when atrocities on our community are increasing, there is a need to increase our awareness about law, our rights and thereby makes ourselves stronger. There is a need to give serious thought in this context. According to the Word of God, Catholic Sabha and the whole community have to work towards the betterment of all, irrespective of religion. I urge the bishop to provide us land so that we can have a building from where we can continue our service to society. About 35 percent of free education and 28 percent of free healthcare is given at Christian private schools and private hospitals."

Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha MP and founder president of Catholic Sabha said, "This organization was started under the leadership of the bishop. If today Catholic Sabha has been successful, it is because of the sacrifice and commitment of many. As Christ said, 'what you do unto others is as you do to me'. Whether you contest in panchayat, assembly or council elections, what you do for people is important irrespective of any factor. Government has implemented many schemes for the betterment of the poor. We have to strive to ensure that these schemes reach the general public."

Mayor Harinath, winners of the recent zilla and taluk panchayat elections and many others were felicitated on the occasion.

MLC Ivan D'Souza, Fr Mathew Vas, spiritual director of Catholic Sabha, Fr Andrew D'Souza, parish priest of Bondel Church, Flavy D'Souza, president of Catholic Sabha and others were present.

Nice to read Catholic Sabha is shining in South Kanara with flying colors. It was our dream after Thyagi Masood Protest which took place on April 1, 1979 to build a strong organization for Catholics in SK. Oscar Fernandes was the President, Walter D'Souza and I were the Vice Presidents when Catholic Sabha was founded and Rev. Stanley R. Pereira was the Chaplain. I wish nothing but the best to this Organization to grow further and fight for the rights of Catholics in South Kanara with Stamina, Courage and Guts.

Among all minorities i have a great respect for catholic community more than my own gsb community with respect to their social services and education and other initiatives. here i m segregating the community from religion. i segregated my community from hinduism and catholic community from christianity. One question i failed to get proper answer even from my friends in catholic community is what are the exact atrocities catholic community in karnataka is facing? and by whom? Please enlighten me so that i can atleast do something to spread the awareness among my own circle of friends. i always believed catholics and gsb are very close

    Prabhumaam,

Many catholics still carry their original GSB names like Prabhu,Kamath etc...

I don't think Catholic's have anything particular against GSBs...during last church attacks in Mangalore when BJP was in power...a GSB(Yogeesh Bhat was ruling party MLA from Mangalore)...I personally believe he has nothing to do with it...But go and ask him if you can...What he did to punish the offenders???

I believe this is one of the main reason why he was defeated in the last elections..

    Dear Langoolacharya., Belman/Washington,DC,

For your kind information as per my knowledge goes Yogesh Bhat is not from GSB. He is a Brahmin. I don't know from which sect, Shivalli or any other type of Brahamin.

Capt. Ganesh Karnik is a GSb Vidhana Parishat member / MLC.

    Santosh,
You have a valid question but I will try my best to answer your question without hurting any community. We Christians believe in One God who is the Almighty. We are open to all faiths and respect all faiths. Some faiths have now started getting a complex and this uncertainty has led to spreading false rumors and attacks on our faith. We Christians are soft and still believe in offering the other cheek.
Now the educated have realized and it is just a question of time …

    Dear Santhosh Prabhu
According to my knowledge always GSB"s and our community lived and lives in cosmopolitan atmosphere . We have never experienced any atrocities from our GSB friends or community . They are very friendly we visit their house for festival. I had a deep and fatherly relation with kudwa maam who was elderly father like figure . He is no more now may his soul rest in peace . Especially after the afternoon lunch break from school I used to visit kudwa maams GSB hall and consume sumptuous afternoon delicious meal . Like this many of mine friends enjoyed ... He was always generous to us and used to invite us especially during function. So I have always positive thoughts on my GSB friends . Let us live in a friend atmosphere . That's all what life means

GSB and Catholic communities have historic ties. Both GSB and Konkani speaking Catholics were one community before the arrival of the Portuguese in Goa. Even today the relations between these communities are cordial and have respect for each other. The unfortunate incident that happened in 2008 was perhaps due to rumours or misunderstanding. Still there is no such thing as communal enmity between us. On a personal note, my GSB friend’s family feels annoyed if I don’t visit them for lunch during my vacation.
