Mangaluru: World Consumer Day celebrated at ZP premises

Mangaluru, Mar 15: In an attempt to create awareness about the consumer's rights, the World Consumer Day was celebrated in the zilla panchayat premises here on Tuesday March 15.

The chief executive officer of DK ZP Shreevidya inaugurated the program. 

In her inaugural address, Sreevidya said, “ZP has given information about Consumer Act to ‘Stree Shakti’ group members in villages. There is a need to create more awareness in villages. In the consumer information both product and service are important in modern society.”

“I call upon the students who have undergone courses on consumer rights to educate people around them.”

“Some people neglect the cases of violations of consumer rights, but one should not neglect even small cases. Consumer rights are at stake. We hear about use of antibiotics in the production of meat. Animals are injected antibiotics to increase the fertility. We need to work together as a team against this.”

In his key note address, president, district consumers’ rights association, Vasanth Salyan said, “The consumer rights was started by the then president of United States, John F Kennedy. He started the consumer day celebrations on March 16, 1962 to create awareness about the consumer’s rights. The theme of this year is 'Antibiotics off human food'. Today consumer rights information offices are operating in all 30 districts of the state. Various institutes are trying to create awareness about consumer’s rights. Some of them are Indian Institute of Public administration, Centre for consumers’ rights which are also giving training to people to spread awareness.”

“I request the ministers to recruit more food safety officers in the district. Adulteration of food is rampant and food safety is a major concern. We need more officers in this regard to control the adulteration,” he said.

Medals and certificates were also given to students who showed best performances in the consumer clubs and the ones who excelled in the certificate courses organised by the consumer rights organization.

Registrar of Mangalore University (evaluation) AM Khan, district information officer Khader Shah were present on the occasion.
