Mangaluru, Mar 17: A large benign liver tumor weighing around 6 kgs was successfully removed from a 17 year old girl who had come to Father Muller Medical College Hospital.

The patient underwent a right Hepatectomy on March 11. Post operative period was uneventful and the patient will be discharged shortly.

A number of liver resections have been performed in this hospital. With the help of state of the art equipment, advanced anesthetic techniques and surgical expertise, liver surgery has become safe with minimal morbidity and mortality.

The complex surgery was performed by a team of surgeons comprising of Dr Ganesh M K (surgical gastroenterologist), ​Dr Harshavardan (anesthesiologist) Dr Erel A I Diaz and Dr Roy Alban Frank.

In another case, Anil, an old painter form Bajpe aged 42 was admitted at Father Muller Medical College Hospital on January 2 after he sustained high voltage electrical burns with extensive soft tissue damage over neck endangering his neck vessels for rupture leading to fatal outcome.

He also had sustained severe tissue damage over both legs exposing the bones to the exterior which would have lead to loss of the limb due to infection, if neglected. He has undergone multiple surgeries including two microvascular free flaps for covering exposed blood vessels over his neck and exposed long bone over right leg. His left leg bone was covered by a perforator flap.

Duration of each reconstructive surgery was about 8 hours. The team of doctors from the plastic surgery department who performed the surgery consisted of Dr Aravind L Rao (plastic surgeon), Dr Devi Prasad S(plastic surgeon), Dr Gowtham, Dr Shreyas (surgery postgraduates) Dr Arjun (ortho postgraduate), Dr Mridula (dermatology postgraduate). Doctors from department of anesthesia were Dr Vishma, Dr Shailaja, Dr Balakrishna.

The patient is recovering from his illness and has begun physiotherapy. He will be able to resume work in a few days.
