DC asks temples to take care of jewellery, enhance security

Mangaluru, Mar 19: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, instructed temple authorities to preserve all the ornaments and other valuables of the temples with great care and following all safety measures like providing adequate security to the jewellery, checking them on a daily basis, fitting of CCTV and burglar alarms, regular audits and compulsory maintenance of all necessary records. He was speaking at a meeting held at his office on Friday relating to safety and security at the temples falling under muzrai department.

He noted that out of 492 A grade temples under the department, only two temples have not been fitted with CCTV cameras so far. He asked for fixing of CCTVs immediately, and providing of all records including photographs of gold and other valuables to the department without delay. Giving example of Kollur temple where the staff had stolen valuables belonging to the temple, he advised the temple management to see that such things do not happen in their temples. He asked fire brigade officials to visit A grade temples and advise the concerned about measures to be taken against fire or other accidents there.

The DC also advised to use paper bags or cloth bags to distribute Prasadams in temples, and to desist dispensation of Prasadam in plastic sachets.

District superintendent of police, Dr S D Sharanappa, advised people giving houses or rooms located near to temples to collect identity cards from prospective tenants as proof before renting out their premises.

Additional deputy commissioner, Kumar, deputy commissioner of police, Shantharaju, Muzrai tahsildar, Prabhakar, and others were present.
