Udupi, Mar 21: Since the last several decades, traders of various wares have made it a habit to assemble at a spot near the city on Sundays to trade their goods at the weekly market. This market meets for half a day, but people from various parts of the district make it a point to come here to look for specific things they need, particularly locally grown fresh vegetables and other unique items at very reasonable prices. But this market has now been shifted because of ongoing highway widening work, resulting in dissatisfaction, disappointment, and frustration among the people and the traders alike.

Santhekatte is a place of prominence between the city and Brahmavar on national highway 66. Over a period, this place has developed into a centre of trade, education, and other activities. All kinds and classes of people visit this place for the weekly market that is famous all over the district, every Sunday.

Fruits, vegetables, chicken etc are brought here by traders in the early morning. Customers flock the area to get things of their choice at a reasonable price by bargaining with the farmers. Unlike other weekly markets in the coast which are held from dawn to dusk, this market runs only till 12 in the afternoon, by which time, almost everything gets exhausted.

This weekly market has been held every Sunday since the last 40 years. Although initially even those who raised other animals like goat and sheep, and fish vendors traded them at the weekly market in course of time, trading of fish alone is continued, and other than fish, only vegetables and fruits, and locally made products from different villages and places are sold. A large number of people from malnad region come here to sell their products.

Because of the highway widening, four-lane highway and two service roads are being laid here. As a result, the weekly market has been shifted from the roadside to near Lord Veerabhadra temple about 200 metres away from its current location.

But the temple management has approached the municipality with an objection, as it apprehends that traders and customers visiting the market may turn the surroundings unholy and unhygienic by urinating, spitting, leaving waste products behind etc.

The traders fear of incurring losses because of shifting the market place. However, many customers are of the opinion that shifting it to a spacious spot would be a better option as currently the market is plagued by parking problem.

Santhekatte is known for traffic snarls and increasing traffic and congestion is posing threat of the area turning into accident prone zone. The highway authorities too have exhibited their recklessness by not constructing a proper bus stand here. MP, Shobha Karandlaje, has turned a blind eye towards the risk posed by the haphazard work and the bus stand that threatens to crumble anytime. Pedestrians and people crossing the road face grave danger on account of increased speed of buses, trucks, and other vehicles. There has also been a demand for construction of under pass like Brahmavar at Santhekatte.

People expect the highway authohorities, local administration, MLA, MP and other concerned to sink their personal egos for the general good of the people and take steps in the larger interests of the people like planting of trees lining the roads, construction of under pass and over bridge, proper facility for holding weekly market, and a proper bus stand so that all the above problems are addressed.

In Srirangapatna, Tippu's armoury was shifted for the sake of double track by the Railways. In Mangalore Rani Abbakadevi's fortress ( the present DC's office compound ) was converted into a Collectors office by the British Administration. It is also being shifted now. Saldanha's property was converted into RTO's office in Mangalore. So what is the big issue of shifting a market ?

Only in this great country do people want to do everything on the highway..selling,buying,eating, s.itting,sleeping..
If a dedicated space/infrastructure is created for a market, they will want it free or they will give a hundred excuses for not occupying it and get back to the highway.I am sure none of this traders will pay even a paisa of income tax. After all we are a country of freeloaders.
There are markets developing in katpadi and Kaup too by the side of the highway. The sooner it is evacuated the better. Newer buildings/Apts are being built either side of the highway in Baikampady, Surathkal without any proper approach/exit roads. Wonder who gives permission for these.

    In first photo 'spandana' shining...
Sad fact morning vee hours shopkeepers purchase items in a.lot and latter purchased by people around in high prices.
    They are enjoying morning sleep.
If shifted to other place..people wont affect much. Autos/pvt. Vehicles will have more business. Widening of roads is a must..while looking safety of all. Incoming of vehicles from 4-5 sides confusing drivers as well as people. Competition of buses in this area cause more of accidents in this area. Market earlier never affected earlier as its start in the morning 4 to end before 10.

The santhekatte market could have been re-located to a nearby place at Nejar ground- where ample space is available for vendors, buyers and parking space. The only problem, I am given to understand, is that the Nejar ground is in Kallianpur where as the existing market is in Udupi Municipal Council. The existing market is not only too small, the small available space is usurped by the vendors by blocking the path by big gunny bags, huge suran/yam and other items for sale. In comparison, the Udupi-Adi Udupi market is well maintained, very spacatious and convenient both for sellers and buyers. It has been almost 5 years for the market to shift, but the authorities have not yet decided to plan a convenient spacious market place. Apparently, the customers are in the least priority in the scheme of things..

Many of those lungi wearing vendors selling spinach, gherkins, or gooseberries have smart phones (and a towel draped on their shoulders to rub the sweat off their brows with this humidity)...

Best way to develop is dont do anything. Anything the govt. wants to do there is opposition and blame the govts that they do nothing. every incident there is politics some are for and others are against. brainless we are remain brainless till we mortgage our brain with the politicians and religious leaders.

How insane are people !! the road development has not completed and people are demanding for a bus stand. Are we taking about building and then demolishing again ?? Danger posed is by the public itself. Nowhere it says that a person has to cross the busy express highway as per his needs. Wait, watch and then cross. There are zebra crossing at certain areas, which is been guarded by local traffic cops. Why cant public use the zebra crossing ?? All in all when accidents take place, people will not hold the public or the person who did the mistake by not taking proper precaution, but shall blame the cops and the rest of the world.

Market should always be far from express way. Main reason for accidents. Media too should visit other countries to see how they develop.

We should not cut trees, should not shift the market place, should not demolish the building on the road then how roads can be widened, how can we develop?

Agree to what you have to say, and also agree that in this case Public works are not carried out systematically

In my opinion, the main problem is, either for development destructive plans are implemented, if not matters are too badly neglected. Can a good balance be maintained between development and environmental concerns?
