PM Modi under fire as middle class India still awaits ‘Achhe din’

New Delhi, Mar 23 (Rueters) : The slogan that spearheaded the election campaign promising the “good days” of lower costs, better health care and livelihood opportunities seems to be hounding the common man of India.

Sharp rises in education and healthcare costs in the last two years have hit India’s burgeoning middle class hard, denting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity among the relatively well-off ahead of a series of state elections.

Price increases for services deemed a luxury for most Indians could also complicate the central bank’s plans to cut borrowing costs, with decades of low investment in schools and hospitals meaning they will remain expensive for some time.

“Spending on my son’s education and medicine for the family has gone up sharply,” said Sambuddha Banerjee, a 47-year-old IT professional, who works for local government in Kolkata.

“The government also cut fuel subsidies and tried to impose taxes on our pension savings. This is not acceptable.”

Banerjee is thinking twice about voting for Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the next general elections scheduled for 2019.

That view is far from universal, but is already on the radar of a government that swept to power in 2014 with promises of economic reforms and pro-business policies that appealed to aspirational Indians living in big towns and cities.

Modi has already seen support among the huge agriculture sector ebb following several crop failures, so appeasing the middle class, which accounts for about a quarter of the 1.3 billion population, looks increasingly important.

“Rising prices of commodities and services which have a higher weight in the consumption basket of middle class households is an issue that cannot be ignored,” said a senior finance ministry official.

“This is a supply side issue and can’t be addressed in the short term,” he added.

To ease some pressure on middle income earners, the government plans to hike salaries of its nearly 10 million employees by 24% this year.
Government backs down

Education costs have risen 13%, housing 10%, healthcare 14% and electricity 8% since Modi took charge in May 2014, time series data on CPI inflation collected by the ministry of statistics showed.

That puts a disproportionate strain on middle class incomes, with education costs accounting for 7% of urban households’ monthly spend compared with 3.5% of rural households, data showed.

Food and beverage prices, meanwhile, which account for more than a half of the CPI basket, fell 10.5% since Modi’s election victory, although there, too, items like milk and eggs favoured by middle income Indians have actually risen.

Owners of motorcycles and cars are further upset that the government took away some windfall gains from falling oil prices in the form of taxes, and people across the country are cutting back on discretionary spending as expenses outstrip earnings.

Underlining the government’s sensitivity to a “squeeze” on the middle class, earlier this month it agreed to roll back plans to tax pension fund withdrawals following a backlash from salaried workers.

While national elections are three years away, the BJP’s popularity faces earlier tests, with ballots in states including West Bengal and Assam later in 2016, and the key battleground of Uttar Pradesh due next year.

Rate cut

A disgruntled middle class also poses problems for Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan, who has pledged to bring down consumer price inflation to 5% by March, 2017 and 4% in the medium term.

Headline retail inflation eased to 5.18% in February from 5.69% in January, but core inflation, which strips out food and fuel, rose to 4.9% from 4.75%, mostly due to increases in education, housing and personal care.

The RBI is widely expected to cut its policy interest rate by 25 basis points on April 5, after lowering it by 125 basis points last year thanks in part to easing inflation and the government’s fiscal consolidation roadmap.

“The spare capacity in the economy is not getting reflected in the core inflation number, which means the challenge for monetary policy to control the demand side pressure is much more,” said one senior policymaker, hinting at the difficulty of deep rate cuts beyond April.

That could be a bad news for middle income Indians who are looking to the central bank to bring down their borrowing costs, particularly after deposit rates fell.

The government slashed the federal pension fund rate and deposit rates offered to millions of small savers to align with market rates, triggering protest from opposition parties.

Despite the complaints, many are willing to give Modi more time to address their concerns.

“Our expectations of him were very high, and he needs more time to solve these age-old problems,” said Kundan Mukherjee, a 51-year-old from Jharkhand, who works for a pharmaceutical company.

The middle class are easily carried away by false promises of our leaders. Those at the helm of affairs have the gift of the gab and can convince people easily during elections just like a fraudster who is very convincing when he plots to cheat people. Now the middle class find their purse poorer with reduction of interest rates on PPF, attempts to tax their savings, increase in prices- education, housing, healthcare, electricity, water, telephone, and people who looted the country allowed to leave the country making a mockery of our system, etc., There is an anecdote: A pious man was given an option by God to choose between heaven and hell. This man first went to heaven and found that it was very calm, serene and all the angels playing sacred music. He found it insipid. He then went to hell and found a very handsome man at the gate to welcome him and as he entered hell he found all were enjoying the four D's - Drink, dine, dance and dwell. Then the pious man was asked by God which he preferred and rightly he chose Hell. So he went to Hell and was shocked to find a frightful disfigured man welcoming him and all those in hell screaming for help in the fire of hell. He asked the man at the gate what is it that you showed me last time during my visit. The man at the door replied last time you came on a visiting visa and now you are on a permanent visa and that is the way we entice people into our territory. The moral of the story: Before elections we are on a visiting visa and after elections permanent visa. God bless us all.

You people just wanted to win the election. You used extreme methods. One was promising whole lot too much. Though knowing about Aim the stars and you will at least reach the clouds, we voted you hoping at least a roof above if not clouds. Also you claimed you were different. So after being deceived for 60 years it was naturally a ray of light for us.
After almost 2 years we feel we are deceived again. We would have been happy if only 5% of the promises came true. Even people abroad get unhappy with their governments. But we can't call ourselves unhappy. Hurt might be right word.

Politics is the best business in the world especially India.

Gujarat is one of the richest Stares in India and the Gujarathis are everywhere in the world they began to remit money, and Mr. Modi could make roads and certain cities as the symbolic display of progress. On the other hand, Gujarat has great debt burden now, also in the healthcare and education, far behind other States.

India is not Gujarat, it is 1.23 billion people. People all over India are not remitting money like the Gujarathis did. How, Mr. Modi could deliver all these Himaylayan economic promises without observing the economic condition of India?

Half of the Indian population might be living with $ 2.00/day, and out of that 1/3 is living with $ 1.25/day or less. The world economy was hit with a recession for six years when he got the PM position at New Delhi.

Chinese economy was slowing down and in 2011, they tried everything to boost the economy through domestic spending and through domestic consumption, but it didn't work out at all.

In that predicament, Mr. Modi was declaring to the whole world that he will be displacing China as the world's super power which is five times of India in GDP. All these rhetorics are totally baseless, but the blind followers are uttering Amen to that. That is the real drama going on in India now.

When the petroleum price was plunged over 70% when compared with the price of June, 2014 how much in price in India? Was it helping the middle class and the poor? Tax increase on many consumer items was a daily routine.

Mr. Modi displayed the image of a politician who can turn water into crude oil his political rhetoric can be a solid reality like a magic.

He was a good debater in the school days thus greatly helped him to be a great politician of India.

But, his Himalayan economic projections and predictions looking abroad as the sources of investment in India to transform India was totally a miscalculated and baseless anticipation.

Presumably, he was not reading about the prolonged recession in the world economy for six years when he got the steering of the Indian economy.

There is far worse social fragmentation in the society now. Whether it is with his consent or not, his comrades and BJP sister parties tried to take advantage of the situation to transform India into an Hindu Theocracy in which 70% of the Hindus are not favoring and the minorities 100%.

The people voted for the BJP was voted for the economic paradise, not to establish a theocracy, there also the target has been missed terribly.

Now India's freedom of religion is being questioned by the world community. Hardly nobody will dare to invest their wealth in a country where the no 1 fundamental right of religious freedom is in question in a so called democratic country.

The price of essential commodities is increasing and increasing. The interest on deposits is decreasing and now it is lowest in 20 years. How the depositors can lead their life who are relying on interest income. Where is black money. PM and FM fully failure in bringing black money. The goodwill of PM definitely has come down among middle class and lower class people. Instead of going to foreign countries he should cover the nook and corner of India to satisfy these people.

Why these bhakts do not realise that they have been already paying - like others who u call seculars here, at an average of 10% more for their daily requirements, Education, Medical etc. since Modi came to power. He promised to bring down prices (Like toorDal from Rs.75 to 200!!)(Dr. S. Kamath from mumbai gets it for Rs.175\-)
His Govt. claiming inflation at its lowest but the commodity prices of all needed by the common man are at its peak.
I do not ask the Bhakts to stop their allegiance to Modi, but to realize the reality of middle\poor class people's plight since Modi came to power abt 2 years back and demand action from him.
Ask him to show proof that he has worked to alleviate the sufferings. (if he knows the meaning alleviate) - (Politicians have their own dictionary for meanings twisted)

Don't blame the people! Blame Modi and his 'bhakt' brigade which had created this impression that once Modi becomes PM, he will cast out all our misery, bring in wealth, prosperity, peace, he will raze Pakistan from the world map etc. So much so that during the campaign in our districts the volunteers who were going from door-to-door seeking votes, used to inform people that if Modi comes to power petrol will be Rs 15 per litre and diesel will be available for Rs 10. Modi came to power not merely on his caliber and charisma but also by projecting the UPA govt in bad light. But now the very things for which he ridiculed the UPA govt are hounding him, fuel prices, food prices, internal security, Pakistan etc. So don't blame the people for the failures of the govt. If you give such high hopes, people expect highest result from you. He spoke as if he had Magic Wand in his hand that would put an end to all the problems that India and Indians faced. Just 2 years into the government, the reality is wide open. You can win elections on eloquence and hoodwinking but you cannot governance requires experience, ability and caliber which is seriously lacking in the present govt.

When you start governing the Nation not on the basis of the Constitution but on the basis of Holy Books and Scriptures of Religion, these things are bound to happen. All those countries which have resorted to Religion for governance have ultimately failed miserably. Secondly even if Modi wants to bring in Ached Din, whom would he trust towards this end? His high-profile ministers Jaitley, Rajnath Singh and Parikkar have not yet got grip on their portfolio and have failed to deliver. Their failures have hurt not just the common people but even the govt itself. There were quite high hopes on Piyush Goyal & Suresh Prabhu but again these two gentlemen are yet to do a substantial difference to their job. Of course with DVS we hardly had any hopes. We wanted him in the Cabinet for his 'SMILEYS'. That's all.

The less is said about Smriti Irani is better. She is in the Cabinet only due to her proximity to the PM and other top BJP leaders and not due to her calibre. Kiren Rijju, Uma Bharti, Maneka Gandhi, Ravishankar Prasad, Najma Hepthullah, Babup Supriyo, Anant Kumar, Ram Vilas Paswan, Rajwardhan Singh etc are in due to political compulsions and are making up numbers only...then there is the 'Motor Mouth' brigade of Mahesh Sharma, Giriraj Singh, Sadhvi Niranjan, Yogi Aditya whose only calibre is their lose tongue. So can this Cabinent help Modi bring Acche Din? Never! It's a weak cabinet. Only Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari have been doing some work and they are the ones who are staying away from publicity too. Rest all are publicity hungry. Compare this with Vajpayee's Cabinet which had people like Advani, George Fernandes, Pramod Mahajan, Jaswath Singh, Yashwant Sinha, Nitish Kumar, Ram Naik who had the caliber and ability to perform and deliver. That ability, caliber, experience is missing in Modi's cabinet and this has been the major drawback of this govt. With this Cabinet Acche Din will only be Utopian concept.

Mr. Modi's right hand comrade Amith Shaw said at the electoral competition to wipe off AAP in New Delhi that the Rs. 15 lakh/person promise was metaphorical. So, the rest of the promises are going to be metaphorical at last.

Ford Motor company is going to pull off one factory from Chennai to Rumania. One hidden accomplishment of the BJP was to undermine the operations of hundreds of NGO which were engaged in humanitarian and social uplift. Ford Foundation was also targeted in that process. The U.S. Ambassador to India Richard Verma gave a warning about that indirectly but the aachi din Government didn't pay any attention in their total focusing and dedication to transform India as a theocracy. Like the massive FDI in trillions of dollars, theocracy will be brining thousands of empty plates to the table.

Foreign investment will not land in any country where the no 1 liberty called religious liberty is not fully operational, other than certain industries fully focused by those industrial giants for making money. Now, there is also high restriction in the liberty of eating their choice of food in India.

A few months back, Saudi Arabia was appealing to the world to invest in that country which is hit too hard due to the highly plunged oil price.

Their high religious conservatism didn't allow what was going on in their sister GCC nation the U.A.E. the vision and practical approach to reach prosperity through pushing down religion to the 2nd and 3rd step.

for your kind information, Mudra scheme is not a govt funded scheme, but a existing loan scheme available at banks, but was named Mudra scheme to make it appear as though it is this chor govt. lending to the masses.

It is all depositors money, and nothing by Feku as you claim.

Modi's performance is not at the level what he promised and what people are expecting.(Both are at very high level). But I dont think we can give Judgement on his performance now itself (bit too early) But one Suggestion to whom they oppose him. Instead of spending much time on finding fault on his work, focus should be on identifying/developing the person (group of people) who can perform better than present. If that is not happening soon, then people without having better alternative option may support again existing one. As of now there is no better alternative for the present. We should except the truth.

Before election to much promises . I will bring black money ,do this and that. But nothing change only taxes increase and more money for our corrupt politician. Day by day everything is increasing. In India any party come they will do nothing for the country only fight between themselves and argue and waste the tax payer money in debating unwanted thing in the parliament . I believe we are the only nation paying so much taxes in return dont get any facilities like health care or social security compared to other developed or European nation . Only we get his bad and Corrupt leader, poor road condition and infrastructure. No proper rules and strict law. in india people can do anything and come out by paying money. Only those who have money and link will survive. Whom to blame as we only elect them . It was rightly said by Winston Churchill that the power will go in hands of rascals ,roughe and freebooters and even a day will come where they will even tax for Water and Air.

How can we forget CONGI Rule bro, those SCAMS, those CORRUPTION, those CHRONIC CAPITALISM, those APPEASEMENTS, those VOTE BANK POLITICS, those INFLATION, those ECONOMIC DEFICIT days, those RECESSION Period, those TERROR ATTACKS. What to Forget?? name what??.
For what you CONGI's have done in last 60 years, MODI Ji, requires at least 5 years to get back to Normalcy. And to add on that PAPPU and his Gang are stalling parliament, to cover their own backs. Those corruption GHOSTS are haunting them. If PAPPU is given power then he will do corruption, if not in power he try to cover his corruption charges. Great AMUL BOY PAPPU. fit for Nothing.
And speaking about Achhe Din. It very much Achhe din, you can't blame everything on Modi Ji. Global economy is trending very badly, despite that India economy is strong. To add on that India was Monsoon deficit previous year. So the price raise of commodities, but it is still under control. And you cannot petrol & diesel prices drastically, it has adverse effects. You have also to compensate for the losses during previous years, when it was give in subsidized rates. So, let the good work of Modi ji continue, All the best.
