Udupi: Mentally unsound man mistaken as thief, tied to pole and thrashed

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (PS/SP)

Udupi, Mar 24: A mentally unsound man was tied to a pole and thrashed allegedly by the owner of a bar who thought him to be a thief. This inhuman incident occurred on Tuesday March 22 night near a bar at the city bus stand here.

The man in question, aged around 30, was working for a hotel near Chittaranjan Circle since the last nearly three months. He suddenly started to behave like having lost control over his mental faculties. Thereafter, he was dismissed from service.

As he created problems for people and shops in the town wherever he went, the locals had handed him over to police. The police had released him after confirming that he was suffering from psychological disorder.

It is said that on Tuesday night, the man tried to break the lock of the bar near the city bus stand, after which the bar owner allegedly tied him up to a pole, as he construed him to be a thief. It is said that the man was also beaten up. The police, it is gathered, took him into custody and later released him. However, when contacted, police personnel of the town station here claimed that they were 'unaware' of any such incident.

Some eyewitnesses said that a few who observed the man's plight and erratic behaviour have contacted 'Vishwasada Mane' at Shankarpura where several such people are rehabilitated.

A very sad incident which should not have happened. The police, who knew this man had some psychological disorders, instead of letting him go, should have sent his to a psychiatric hospital. He could have got treated and lived a normal life. If he is not put in the proper place, he could be harmed by others for his erratic behavior but also harmed others.

Really it is a big tragedy and inhuman act. One should pity on this guy. The people are really not catch the real thief as they are afraid of them. They catch and beat only those who are insane treating him like a thief. wonderful people. The person who tied him and beaten him should be punished for his criminal activities.

sad it happened to a man who is unsound mentally.we Indians are first raise Hands before Clearing it and asking who he /she is.This should be stopped in future.whoever it is doing wrong ,first catch and ask his identification.and then not clear, handover him to Police.Dont be a self judge.and thrash him.It can end tragic.May be the Hotel Manager thought he is a thief. But why thrash first and call Police?Police too thrash later in their Office.Does this fellow have no caring Person, mother or other relatives?why did they inform them if existing?Hope in future he will be treated first ,before next thrash.I remember in my childhood, there was such man,who would steal coconuts from others for his needy as home People were not giving Money .but neighbours were insisting him to bring things for them, but when he was thrashed he had to bear alone, noone was ready to fight for him.I was Feeling pity for him.Later I heard one day he fell down from coconut tree and died. No one was pitying him.

very easy to comment all great words. Are you ready to forgive him if he tried to get entry to your premises... think twice. recently there was an incident near our house. one stranger was found peeping in to a small house ( rented ) near our house and trying to break the lock put on the doors. Neighbors asked who is this... suddenly this gentleman started running jumping from compound to compound. Now all started screaming thief thief and finally few people walking on the road caught him and everybody thought he is a thief. then police came and they took him along. Later only we are told that he was a psycho. We still don't know was that true or it was a game play by police to let him off. so, it's good that bar owner caught him and taught him a lesson , not to get in to such acts even if he is a psycho. The ear is so bad that the thiefs or robbers can try to get entry to shops or houses with any reason....

@readerwriter 007,Pune,do you think he will be better with your type of punishing?our society today is only of teaching one by thrashing. No understanding.Instead ,thak God Police let him go.Certain things can be done by some Patience and understanding.Previous days People used to put the mentally unsound people tie to a tree and thrash. Now we treat them with psychiatric ward ,with medicines ,or using other ways.and they do Show much improvement.

Don't hold the bar owner guilty. He has beaten him thinking that he was a thief and thieves deserve such treatment.
Another reason for not holding the bar owner as guilty because he is doing a social service by distributing alcohol we shouldn't condemn such great people for these small incidences.

    Very sad..,

These people need love.., not thrashing.., pity on him to see tied up & thrashed.., after all he is a human being with mental disorder (may be temporary)..., he need counseling, care & love.

Some time when a person fail to successfully face & lead a noble life due to financial/family/relationship/societal/work/business related reasons , find it difficult to face life & behave abnormally. It can happen to anybody due to complex world we are living in..,
I only hope he will recover to be a noble man sooner than later.., good to see someone take the pain to refer him to to the vishwasada mane, hopefully a right place for him to rehabilitate.

    with love..,

There are so many accidents everyday, innocent people getting killed under the wheels, nobody want to take action on drivers, but people take law into their hands by hitting mentally retarded people... Shame.
