Udupi: Bananas being ripened with toxic chemicals - Court orders ban

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Mar 26: The court of the the chief civil judge here has restrained the practice of ripening bananas with the help of poisonous chemicals for supply all over the district on a daily basis. This practice was in vogue on Rampura-Kemthoor road in Alevoor village here, where godowns had been built adjacent to residential houses, where raw bananas were brought in trucks and stored on a daily basis and ripened with the help of banned chemicals and carbide for causing bananas to ripen earlier and natural ripening takes longer.

Allegedly, businessmen engaged in banana trade used to turn 10 to 15 loads of raw bananas into ripe ones with the help of chemicals every day. The smoke emanating from these godowns was proving to be hazardous for people residing in nearby areas. Trees in the region wear the look of having been burnt due to fire. The banana so ripened also pose dangerous side affects for public health in the form of slow poisoning, the petitioner had argued.

The process of chemical ripening of bananas was practiced at Rampura in Alevoor since the last three years. Even after the local administration suspended licences and issued warning notices, the activity continued, it is said. A local, M Sharat Kumar, had filed case against this practice in the court here on behalf of the people of the area. The court which upheld his prayer, has ordered the concerned to stop ripening bananas with the help of banned chemical substances including carbide.

Nowadays, insecticides and pesticides are used since the early stages of plants for getting higher yield and protecting the plants from insects and pests. Adding chemicals to them further for ripening can have catastrophic affects on the health of the people, said advocate for the petitioner, H Anand Madiwala.

We have to wake up. Have to put pressure on Health officers/ Inspectors to raid all the shops and seize all the fruits, vegetables, chicken etc those are found harmful to health. Health officers have YO go every shop & collect the items and then they have to send it for lab test. If anyone found guilty, they have to take legal action on them. Please wake up everyone and let us put pressure on Health officers. Otherwise they are sleeping in the office without doing anything. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN HEALTH. JOIN TOGETHER AND TEACH THE LESSON TO THE CULPRIT.

Everywhere chemicals and spray are used to commercialize our products today.what we get bananas from S.america too are green and first washed with chemical water ,so that it doesn't spoil on Boats.later are packed in Containers for Export.later they will be riped with gas .same with Mangoes.very green plucked.Bananas are in plantation sprayed naturally noone should see.One week before plucking ,no spray for all fruits like Zitrone.later we receive banana, riped. At present bann for Indian Curry leaves here because of pesticides found.Indians dont learn.Instead of trying to send articles without pesticide ,and increase our Export. Now China is very much on .Even in India, rice, vegetables in market ,fish which is caught in artificial Ponds.Naturally antibiotics is necessary to avoid sickness of fish .To gain weight soon, what Food is given?and People get sick ,no antibiotics is working when sick.why ?Here is the reason.Today we have more Money than previous but clean Food is not available unless one grows self without pesticides.Happy EASTER TO ALL.

The country with population of Billion plus. The value for human life is negligible.
Sadly, we are ready to cut each other's throat for the subject of religion.
Absence of strict Food control act and consumer awareness is lacking in a country which want to attain 'development'
Can't we stand together for the common cause?

I agree with your views. We need to stand together. Any defensiveness to allow for these chemicals just to protect the livelihood of some is a wrong argument without merit.

Our country by and large has tropical and hot climate. Due to our inability to understand the necessity of proper storage and transport of perishable commodities like fruits - the industry is using illegal means to keep the fruits fresh. Exported fruits like Mangoes are subject to more stringent inspections( read the article on Malaysia giving a large order for Karnataka mangoes) right from the stage of plucking to storage and transport.

However domestic market no one is bothered as our scientific, medical and public at large are ignorant of the cause and effect for the rise in chronic diseases.

In developed nations there is very effective public health department, environmental health department. Our system is still following the old British which is rigid and has not evolved over the years to handle the food safety concerns.

Indian Pharmaceutical Industry exports generics to developed countries like USA. Their FDA inspectors have found serious violation at the manufacturing plants with high disregard to protocols necessary to produce safe drugs. Imagine the drugs(medicine) that we take - any one can vouch for their safety?

There is scientific evidence that calcium carbide residues ( along with other impurities) are present in the flesh of Bananas, mangoes. The long term health consequences - be it cancer, internal organ damage are serious price we pay for eating these tainted fruits.

There is largely very negligible punishment and therefore unlawful practice goes on. Prof Narendra Nayak has been doing a great service to the public in high lighting the adulteration of foods with dangerous chemicals. I do recall once learning from his show at Karavali Utsav that turmeric powder is sometimes tainted with metanyl yellow, a cheap chemical which is harmful.

Do not worry about this at all. We all have been eating vegetables from the market, packed grains, red watermelons etc all these years. Moreover we have been drinking not so pure water, breathing not so clean air and hence developed a natural immunity ourselves. What can these artificially ripened bananas do to us?

The comments of some indeed drive home the point of our ignorance on this issue.

Tainted banana's indeed affect us- so it is illogical to say that we will not face consequences. The air we breath, the food we eat along with water we drink have major effect on our health when we reach middle age.

Calcium carbide tainted bananas are not so difficult to differentiate from naturally ripened bananas. The chemical( Sunna) some time lingers on the skin. Mostly these bananas are green at the edges yet appear very bright yellow elsewhere yet hard inside( not ripe).

I do not buy the banana ( Yelakki, Dev bale) from Chain stores ( Malls) as they come tainted with carbide( I have examined them to find whitish residue on them). You a vendor who shows you the original whole bunch he is keeping to ripe naturally.

Water melons with bright red pulp ( they inject erythrocine- acid base indicator chemical ). Once when we ate this - since its content was very high- most of us fell sick. It causes liver damage. Now we buy from Mall chain store ( their water melons are good).

Calcium carbide on contact with moisture produces ACETYLENE gas( the gas used in welding). As this mimics ethylene gas( the banana ripening agent), it does the trick but residue of this toxic as well as carcinogenic chemical starting material( calcium carbide) remain in the fruit.
Brightly colored papaya - Ghatta dha are most probably tainted with calcium carbide. In India one can break the law as there is no enforcement.
Mango fruits are 90 percent supplied to us have been ripened using this calcium carbide. Any one who can challenge this fact can do so.

If you have eating the habit of banana skins, yes, i agree with you. Calcium carbide can enter your body.

Sir, Please do not escalate the issue. The whole process is dangerous only to the people indulged in artificial ripening. They are exposed to calcium carbide which is usually contaminated with arsenic. The acetylene gas produced too is dangerous for the workers but, it does not enter the bananas.

It's quite simple, All things are poisons, for there is nothing without poison, they poisoned the banana and other fruits to, with chemicals, what about the pollution from factories, cars and power stations. Silly humans if they knew what they were doing, but carried on by poisoning the planet anyway...

Very informative. Consumers have no choice but to purchase whatever is available in the market, without giving a heed to all steps the product may have undergone before its coming to their hand.

It would have been more effective if you had put up some pictures of affected vegetation in the surrounding. People will be vigilant of such signs and remember why/how it may have happened to the nature.

It's not only bananas, most the fruits and vegetables are ripened, sweetened and given refresh look using dangerous chemicals.
Even at the cultivation level most of the edibles grow with the pesticides.
Cows are fed with urea to increase the quantity of milk.
Chickens are fed with urea and injected with steroids to make the grow faster.
Nothing left without chemicals. It's hazardous food we are eating.
We are ourselves shortening our life span.

I agree with your comment which is fully explanatory of the conditions prevailing in food items.
However, I do not expect dawn of a new day in this area and unfortunately, we will have to live with it. Don't expect from our state and central govts any action.
