Kundapur, Mar 28: In yet another case of its kind, a farmer committed suicide late light on Saturday March 27 after he was unable to pay back loans borrowed from a bank.

The deceased has been identified as Tangachchan alias K V Thomas (54), residing at Kutyanikal in Halkal village under Jadkal gram panchayat.

It is said that Thomas had borrowed heavily, and the bank which had lent to him, had been insisting on clearance of his loan before the end of March this year.

Thomas, who had cultivated two acres of land, had grown coconut and rubber there. It is said that he had borrowed over five lac rupees from a bank for this purpose, and he was under pressure from bank officials to clear his dues before this financial year end.

Thomas, it is said, was stuck in a situation in which he was facing losses in agriculture, market price for his products was falling, and his dues in the bank were mounting. Pressure to repay loan came as the last straw on the camel's back, his close ones said.

Being stressed out and feeling directionless, Thomas consumed insecticide when no one was around, and ended his life. his wife and son were away at the church when he took this decision.

Byndoor MLA, K Gopal Poojary, visited the bereaved family and consoled the grieving members. A case of unnatural death was filed in Byndoor police station.

There should be kind of partnership between common people and farmers for mutual benefits

This is not the first instance where a farmer like Thomas committed suicide as he was unable to pay back his loan to the bank. Banks have their own rules but our government should help such farmers at this time. The losers are just the farmers but no one else.

Lakhs of agriculturists have already given up their lives in India, unable to repay their loans.

It is indeed a cruel, pathetic situation, that agriculture (on which almost 70% of India's population depends) has become
    unremunerative, for various reasons.

Since I worked for a fairly long term as a P.S.Bank Manager among the struggling/underprivileged farming community, this situation really breaks my heart.

I hope our political leaders, together with agricultural scientists , try to solve this problem, by finding ways & means to eliminate the root cause of the problem, i.e., the very distressing/depressing/unremunerative character of farming activity in India.

Solutions can definitely be found. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Meanwhile, let's hope that our farmer brothers be brave, and not lose hope and patience.

There are 2 things wrong here. 1 the importation of raw palm oil from Malaysia has destroyed the livelihoods of people growing coconuts. Solution - There should be a msp for coconuts.
2nd -All these so called expert dietitians and doctors keep saying that coconut is bad for health without any proof of that - just because the foreigners have said that to sell their sunflower oil here. There is no proof that coconut is bad for health. In fact now it is recommended to use coconut oil in many dishes.

sad he committed suicide. But the Problem is not solved Certainly his Family have to repay .why suicide ,instead ask bank for a better conditions improvised. When bank doesn't agree ,sell a part of it if possible. Now Family have to suffer. One shouldn't take loans above his possibility.Sure rubber plantations take time to yield.but hard work is needed. He could have gone to work somewhere else to pay back.with Family supports nothing is impossible.Heartfelt sympathy to his Family.

It is to sit in a system and assume things and comment on it. Who knows if he had profit or loss.10 days profit and 20 days loss would not make any sense.Market value keeps goes high and low. He had a family as well with his land to run. We being in city our income is not satisfactory for us to lead our daily life. His income must be low. Coconut and rubber gets good price once its transported to others places. God know how much he was earning.Upon that kids education and stuffs. Without knowing do not blame loan is taken for some other purpose. And selling land is not as simple as we type in the keyboard some words.Yes, Bank people should approach some authorities to recover the loan amount for these kind of farmers.

First check why such a big loan is taken for 2 acres of land ? We'll have come from agriculture family with small land holdings. Even a person who goes for daily wages in Mangalore and Udupi can earn Rs. 400 to 500 per day. Coconut cannot give a big income for servicing big loans and it doesn't need so much money to plant coconut in 2 acres of land. Rubber at even today's price for a person holding small plantation is enough do he works hard. So loan is taken for some other purpose and let's not blame agriculture for every suicide in the country. Man have to work hard and these misplaced suicide and compensation will encourage many more people on the edge to take extreme step.

Bank people should approach some authorities to waive / recover the loan amount of these kind of farmers. Even they guide the people where and how to approach and get rid of some stress.
