Muslim family taken off US flight for 'how they looked'

Chicago, Apr 2 (IANS): A United Airlines pilot asked a Muslim family of five to leave a plane before it took off, citing "safety" issues, media reported on Saturday.

Eaman-Amy Saad Shebley, her husband and three young children were about to take off on a flight bound for Washington at a Chicago airport when the pilot asked them to get off the aircraft.

The family enquired earlier whether the stewardess could provide five-point harness safety seats for their children.

Two videos filmed by Shebley show the stewardess and then the pilot asking the family to leave.

Shebley asked the pilot whether it was a “discriminatory” decision. The pilot replied it was a “flight safety issue” but were not given any details.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations sent a letter to United Airlines on the family’s behalf demanding disciplinary action against the staff involved, the Independent reported.

“We are tired of Muslim-looking passengers being removed from flights for the flimsiest reasons, under a cryptic claim of ‘security’,” said CAIR-Chicago Executive Director Ahmed Rehab in a statement.

“Security means securing passengers, not harassing and humiliating them and booting them off their flight for, of all things, actually asking for security.”

Shebley wrote on Facebook: “Shame on you ?#?unitedAirlines? for profiling my family and me for no reason other than how we look and kicking us off the plane for "safety flight issues" on our flight to DC for the kids spring break. My three kids are too young to have experienced this.”

The airline apologised multiple times to Shebley’s family after they got off the plane and were rebooked on another flight.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, United Airlines said the family was rebooked “on a later flight because of concerns about their child’s safety seat, which did not comply with federal safety regulations” and said the airline has “zero tolerance for discrimination”.

We the people live on this planet earth for peaceful existence. In my culture of belief in India, you will find women shielding their head with saree and in Rajasthan/Madhya Pradesh they cover their head as well. Convent nuns will have a attire that covers their head and it resembles angelic look and are very peaceful. Holy land Jews have beards. Its really painful for kicking out a family because of their mere identity. Let the humanity prevail...

We do not what the real issue was but the pilot did for safety reasons as we all know terrorism and high jacking of planes has been a main concern for all flyers. This is not the first instance where passengers were taken off from flights. This Muslim family may be clear of their conscience but I feel sorry for that family what they went through.

We always hear one side story of descriminations of the west but not the fact. It is become very routine for many to every stupid thing calling as Descrimination in western nation because west listen to such allegations but we most of such people land into thier own native land there is not even human respect and torture rapes then it is all good for them. I feel so sad to see when people take advantage of Secular democratic freedom to use thier own benifit to sue and get free money from companies. I see it has become a norm for many in the mostly immigrants use this tactics to teach a lesson to corporation or white people. I feel sad. We came here better life and not to blackmail people. How this lady video that scene so that she can share with her fellow people. Look like a fake story

Here in India there is daily media nautanki attributing everything to Intolerance discrimination..there are crores of temples but only handful wont allow women as its a custom since hundreds of year. But five star activist media cries its discrimination. Court also goes with them projecting like gender bias discrimination in every where in temples.

I don't think it was anything to do with discrimination against the Muslims. If the FAA approved five-point harness seat is not available on the plane on demand or you argue with the crew member with unnecessary demand, it is the policy of the airline to deplane the passenger. Depending on child's age, many passengers keep their babies on the lap. It is most unlikely that crew will kick out anyone simply asking for five-point harness seat.

During my last trip to Houston, Texas, I have seen three Muslim male were praying by spreading the rug near the Gate entrance. Hundred of people were in waiting area and I was watching their reaction. Not a single person, including airline staff for blocking the passage, even in body language expressed anything. I said to myself, what a tolerant people and what a perfect place to live on the earth!!

Being a US citizen, I have served as Jury in many occasion. Some people are making their living by suing at the of a hat and settling out of court in order to avoid lengthy and expensive litigation. One time I asked a question in the jury panel as to know how many times the petitioner has sued in the past. The judge did not allow that question as it would prejudice the jury decision.
