Beltangady, Apr 5: In a strange incident which occurred at Baje in Koyyur village in the taluk on the night of Sunday April 3, a labourer killed another with a long knife over a trivial issue. The murder-accused, identified as Sanjeeva Poojary from Koyyur, stands arrested by the policemen here.

Padmanabha Poojary (51) from Darbe in Bantwal Casba village was the unfortunate victim of this incident. Padmanabha, who was working in a plantation at Baje in Koyyur village, had visited the market place on Sunday late evening to buy betel leaves, bidi etc. He met Sanjeeva Poojary there. The two got engaged in an exchange of heated words on a trifle issue, after which Sanjeeva Poojary drew out a long knife and hit Padmanabha behind his neck and left hand.

Owner of the plantation where Padmanabha worked got a call from the owner of the shop located near Maindakody bus stand about the fight and that Padmanabha had collapsed, at around 8.45 pm. As soon as the family members rushed to the spot, Sanjeeva threw away the knife in his hand and escaped. Padmanabha, who had sustained deep injuries, had already died.

It is said that the two labourers often quarreled with each other, and Sanjeeva often threatened Padmanabha against moving about on the way on which the former's house is located. The Sunday's murder occurred because of intoxication, it is said, and that Sanjeeva kicked up a fight purposefully before attacking Padmanabha.

On the basis of a complaint filed by a local named Balakrishna, a case stands registered in the police station here. Sanjeeva Poojary has been taken into custody by the police, and investigation is progressing.
