New Delhi, Apr 10: The union government promised the state government to release Rs 200 crore for the development of ports in the state on Saturday, April 9.
Karnataka port and inland water development minister Baburao Chinchansur, after meeting union minister for road transport and shipping Nitin Gadkari told the media that Gadkari promised him of releasing the funds under central scheme for development of ports and inland waterways.
Chinchansur said that the money will be utilised for the development of ports including Karwar, Malpe, Kundapur and Honnavar.
Gadkari has also agreed to sanction around Rs 60 crore for the development of old Mangaluru port which involves construction of a dedicated berth for union territory of Lakshadweep (UTL) vessels at port, Chinchansur revealed.
The Karnataka government and UTL already signed a memorandum of understanding for setting up of dedicated berth for UTL vessels at old Mangaluru port. The berth will be utilised for supplying essential commodities in Lakshadweep. Lakshadweep gets most of its supplies from Mangaluru for years.
