Mangalore, Oct 15: “Students of social work need to work to ensure smiles on faces of people. They need to know that smile yields another smile, thus miles of smiles will be brought on faces of people”, declared Octavia Albuquerque, former MLC, and alumni of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya here at the Nilaya auditorium on Sunday October 14.

Addressing old students of the institution at a get-together entitled “Annual Home Coming Day Celebration”; she said that the students were sunshine’s and lights of the society. However, according to her society is selfish and people face many problems like litigations, financial problems and loneliness. It is such cases that social workers must play the role of trouble shooters with genuine heart, she advised.

Advising not to let heart rule the mind, she urged social workers to work without expecting gratitude from people and fight their own drawbacks, to serve society better. She said social workers must learn to teach others to do fishing rather then feeding with fish. If anyone is facing problems in his or her life, either social or personal, or owing to stress, uncertainty, insecurity and the like, a social worker must teach him or her how to overcome problems, she explained thereby differentiating social work from what is generally known as giving solutions.

Moreover, she appreciated those taking up social work at graduation and post-graduation level and said today’s generation are privileged to take up social work as full time occupation, which was never possible before and advised that whoever wanted to take up social work as goal in life must first equip oneself, by being prepared which involves self-training being in touch with academics.

The School of Social Work’s Alumni association chairperson Asha Nayak welcomed the gathering. The treasurer Mabel D’Souza presented the accounts and the secretary Priya Shetty read the annual report.

Jacinta Vijay Alfred, corporator, Falnir ward and old student of the institution was felicitated on the occasion

The occasion was also graced by Dr Jacintha D’Souza, ex-officio president of the association.

Dear Mr Joe, we can express our gratitude either by words or deeds. I guess Ms Octavia Albuquerque has rightly said to the Students of social work, need to work to ensure smiles on faces of people’ that implies one should not expect anything in return, for our goodwill. Just because someone has not come back and expressed his gratitude, you should not change your attitude. Perhaps the person whom we have helped has remembered us in his/her prayers or has returned it in four folds to someone who was in need. Helping others is a blessing to you and on your generation. We need not speculate on what others are doing. So will forget our attitude and gratitude and continue with our bounteousness silently.

It is always nice to listen speeches. Mrs.Otti Albuquerque's advise to Social Workers"Do Not Expect Gratitudes". I was at Sunday Church Service and the preacher gave Sermon on gratitudes. How people should show gratitudes to others for what they have done, just as we show gratitude to the Almighty Lord for what He has done for Us. Now who should I beleive? I just want to ask myself if the word "THANKS" SHOULD BE ELIMINATED from the Vocabulary.

I have studied under Jesuits, and they always taught me and other students, the meaning of gratitudes and the word Thanks. I am proud to say that "I still follow the teachings of Jesuits" The Social work and the Gratitudes go hand in hand. Today we live in a world of "Give Me". Years back, when help was given, receiver will hold hand towards Lord and pray for the helper,or fall at helpers feet. Today the Receiver will curse once the favour is done and over. My Social help stops at the very same minute it started if gratitudes and attitudes are missing.

In today's world some Social Workers are doing Anti Social Work. In the name of the poor, they get huge funds from abroad and government grants and the same are misused for their personal reasons. In the name of protecting the environment, they instigate innocent and illiterate people to revolt and thus not only hamper development, but also create more confusion and kios in society.
